It’s a great colour grading tool whether you’re a beginner or not. One of those things I can’t imagine being without now I have it.

I’d test what happens without restoring the preference file. Let FCPX generate a fresh one. Otherwise delete FCPX and reinstall the app.

In my experience, permissions issues can stop you accessing files, but I’ve never had a case where they’ve stopped me seeing a file exists – so if the aliases aren’t finding the original media files, I suspect that your original permissions issues prevented them being copied across to your external drive.

It’s never had the option during import but you can apply it after the fact. Options are towards the bottom of the video section of the info panel.

That’s a link to just the internal rendered media. You can’t get anything out of that.
The alias files in Original Media means that the original media wasn’t stored in your library at all, just links to it. There may be files in the High Quality or Optimised Media folders? Where does the alias point to? That’s where your media should be…
I’m being a bit vague because 10.0.4 is ancient and the current FCPX is a completely different beast as far as file management goes. My memory doesn’t go back that far.

You can find your files in the FCPX Project file… go to it in the Finder, right click, and choose “Show package contents”. Your media files should be in the Original Media folder.
It’s been a VERY long time since FCPX 10.0.4 was considered useable and I can remember issues like yours coming up many times in the past. My best advice would be to get your project finished as best you can and then move as quickly as you can to the current version.

You can see the waveform in the clip browser if that’s what you mean .Click on the clip appearance button (lower right of the browser pane) and tick the ‘show waveforms’ checkbox.

You select a clip or a range, apply a keyword e.g. “Cocktail Hour”. the clips are magically in the “Cocktail Hour” keyword collection.
Alternatively, create an event called “Cocktail Hour”, drag the appropriate clips into that event, make clips or ranges as favourites, choose to only view favourites in the browser menu.
FCPX doesn’t use folders to organise clips the way I think you’re trying to do it.

Sorry to hear it doesn’t work any more, although I only really run it on my Snow Leopard machine these days so I hadn’t noticed. And yes, it is for voice work only, but that’s what the tool is for so I’m not sure why someone would use it on music. Having said that, if you understand how it works you can get away with using it on an entire mix.
Nobody’s disputing what you can do with a compressor. I was a musician and sound engineer for almost 20 years, so I have no problems using any audio tool I choose. I just have a nostalgic soft spot for that particular software and there’s a certain nuance I like about end result. In the same way I like iZotope’s Ozone compressor for some things but prefer Wave’s Renaissance for others.
Anyway, I don’t think this is doing much to help the original poster so it might be time to get back on topic if there’s anything else to add.
