I’m not expecting FCPX to suddenly get all the features of a DAW. I see roles becoming pseudo tracks feeding into master busses.
I’d still be working like I do now, finessing volume, adding effects, etc on a clip by clip basis if needed, which will move around the magnetic timeline as always. The addition would be a mixing panel that had a global master fader and a channel for each audio role I’d created.
So basically you have the option of working with individual clips, the roles as if they were tracks, or a timeline master bus. If you need more than that, there’s still the option to export to Pro Tools or whatever. Then as I mentioned earlier, give me the option somewhere of ducking one or more roles based on the volume level of other roles and I’d probably never have to send audio outside of FCPX.

at a basic level simply being able to duck one or more selected roles by x% whenever the volume of the dialogue role exceeds a certain threshold would work for me.

Just re-reading the post, you definitely want to be using isotope RX for street interview background noise.
Keep in mind that street noise in general is fairly broad spectrum noise so nothing is really going to make up for just getting a good signal to noise ratio in the first place. You will be able to target particular sounds and parts of the noise spectrum though.

At the end of the day there’s not going to be any way to know the cause.
In theory, a read operation copying files from the card to hard drive isn’t doing anything that can erase a card (if there was a write operation involved, you wouldn’t be able to write-protect a card while copying) but if that was the cause, it could just as easily have happened copying the files from A to B in the Finder, as FCPX doesn’t use any copy process that’s different to OS X.
On the other hand, I’ve seen cards, and hard drives, that for one reason or another failed while being read. One minute you could see the files and the next – nothing. I’ve had cards come from a camera that wasn’t shut down properly on set, that were completely or partially unreadable in OS X. Sometimes putting the card back in the camera and shutting it down properly fixed it, sometimes not. Keep in mind that just because the directory could be read and you could see a list of files, doesn’t mean there’s no corruption elsewhere on the media.
Anyway, each to their own, I just think card fault caused crash rather than crash caused card fault. Either way it’s one of those heart stopping things that causes cold sweat and more than a few sleepless nights. Glad yo got most of it back.

I own both.
Soundsoap is cheap, simple to use, does an ok job once you get the hang of it, which takes about ten minutes once you’ve read the user guide. Great for a quick fix on simple problems.
Izotope RX is a professional audio tool, and if it can be fixed, this is the tool thats going to do it – especially the advanced version which is not cheap but worth every penny. I’ve owned it for three years now and I am still learning new ways to use it.
Which is to say buy iZoptope RX if that’s what you’re thinking, and you will be able to deal with pretty much any audio issue that comes your way.

Have you tried transcoding to something other than ProRes 4444? And what Mac is this being edited on? I’m just wondering if your GPU isn’t up to the heavy lifting that that particular flavour of ProRes requires.

Personally, I doubt that that FCPX erased your card. More likely the card was corrupt in some way and FCPX crashed when OS X stopped being able to read the data. And yes, the lesson is a good one – only a crazy person doesn’t make at least one backup copy of their media asap. 🙂

If you’re asking does FCPX natively support the Panasonic LUT then the answer is no. The metadata is there to tell the app a LUT needs to be applied, but as far as I know, and I’ve never had a genuine Varicam clip to see if it behaves differently, FCPX doesn’t have the appropriate LUT built in.
On the other hand, the Panasonic LUT isn’t all that great and many people prefer using the Arri log c LUT with GH4 log footage anyway.
Even using FCPX on a Mac Mini with its low end graphics would be a challenge so it shouldn’t be a surprise it slows to a crawl when you’re applying a GPU based plugin to 4K media.
You might try the free mLUT plugin from MotionVFX. I find that to be faster than Color Finale if all I want to do is apply a LUT and some basic colour correction.

You could also output the project as XML and use a text editor to change the old paths to the new ones, then re-import.
