  • I hadn’t noticed the specs for your computer in your signature before and they’re definitely good enough. I have similar here.

I’d suggest getting the Mac Pro checked out. I had some weird things happening on the screen – UI objects the wrong colour, occasional glitches in the FCPX viewer, and just general slowness – and it turned out one of the graphics cards was failing.

How fluid your experience will be depends on 1) your hard drive bandwidth and 2) your GPU. A USB3 drive will be ok for small projects in HD but I’d expect to to struggle for anything with multiple storylines, high quality audio, etc – USB as a technology doesn’t tend to be great at the type of sustained throughput that video projects need.

I personally keep the library and the media on my external drive (a two drive Thunderbolt RAID 0 enclosure) and don’t generally have any issues with bandwidth. I have started keeping my cache and render files on a second external drive and to me FCPX seems to have fewer slow downs but I don’t have any real evidence it helps but logic says that adds another spindle to the mix so must be doing something.

The GPU is going to be key to fast renders and smooth application of effects as most are GPU accelerated. The GPU is probably more important than the CPU and RAM in terms of speed – although RAM plays a part too – the more the better. I’d say 8gb of RAM is really the minimum for FCPX and 16gb would be a preference. My iMac with 32gb of RAM always seems a little smoother to use than my 2013 Mac Pro with only 8gb RAM.

Well that’s my 2c worth anyway but I’m not really a tech guy.

Question 1 – Either wait until you’ve made the compound clip to add chapter markers or use a title adjustment layer. The latter is perfectly acceptable practice rather than just a “dodge”.

Questions 2 & 3 – they’d be great to have, send feedback to Apple.

As far as 10.3, compound clips, and audio lanes goes that will probably depend on what and how you edit but moving to 10.3 hasn’t mean I’m using any more or less compound clips than I would have beforehand.

  • In theory there’s an astronomical limit but in reality it’s whatever your workstation can support as dictated by hard drive I/O bandwidth, available RAM, etc.

You can choose where the media is stored under the project properties pane. Click on a project and look at the info panel – the first option should be “Storage locations”.

if you have final cut libraries on your internal drive and you’re storing everything inside the libraries then it’s possible you’re losing space to render files, optimised media, etc. Use the storage locations option to move those you your external drive as well.

  • I guess it’s allowing for the fact you could export the project to three different .mov files as a bundle and they’d all have to have different names so it appends the preset name to the file.

Don’t know of any way around it though.

Can’t say I’ve seen it happen on any of the machines I have here. Have you tried trashing the FCPX preferences?

Like the others, I can’t quite understand why Final Cut is getting you to apply optical flow if you’re playing back 1:1. Where are you applying the optical flow – In the retiming menu or using the rate conform option in the info pane? Can you choose to not apply any interpolation? it shouldn’t need it.

Just an aside, if you go into the GH4 options and set it to use shutter angle instead of shutter speed, you can just set it to 180 degrees and the shutter speed will always be correct no matter what fps you’ve set. Just gives you one less thing to think about in the middle of a shoot.

Hadn’t come across that app before. Looks promising – I’ll have to have a play with it.

Color Finale can’t export LUTs. I think you could probably copy presets you save in the Finder and share them with other Colour Finale users but that’s about the extent of it.
