Download AJA’s disk utility here and actually measure the drive(s)

Why is it running slower? Possibly the RPMs are 5400 and the USB drive is 7200? Also how are both drives formatted?

Generally USB 2 BURSTS faster than firewire, but firewire is faster sustained. USB is host controlled – meaning your mac has to route all the data.

IF you just configure the third drive, you’ll have your projects media in a folder based on it’s name, in two capture scratch folders and a two Render folders (and audio renders).

You can manually move that stuff now (and relink) or at the end of the project use the Media Manager to consolidate everything to a single drive.

I’m simplifying here – but you’ll notice 59.94 is exactly twice of 29.97 – they mix beautifully. It’s mixing with PAL or 23.98 (truly different frame rates) that are painful.

As I recall (and I haven’t tested it recently) the video card driver that apple designed under bootcamp driver doesn’t really work well with MC under windows on a MBP>

Sounds that way. It’s still merely copying the data. Typically the proper extension for an MPEG Transport stream is M2T, not MPEG (although, both are valid.)

It’s the data that was on the tape. Still not transcoding.

Michael,

There is only one format for DVD – it’s MPEG-2
Compressor has some wonderful presets for it.

DVDSP will convert it if you haven’t. So will iMovie.

Having read your post, I see what’s wrong: I think you’re going to need to do a transcode to something FCP can edit and then later, an encode that’s optimum for youtube.

For FCP:
AVI’s aren’t going to work well. Transcode to ProRes or ProRes LT (light) – it’ll be about 1 min to 1 gig, but FCP will work well and renders will be very quick.

For Youtube
Utilize the Apple Preset in compressor – it’ll build a bigger file that you’d expect – it’ll be about 60 megs or so per minute, but youtube will handle it fine for scaling down to multiple sizes.

The codec for the export part via compressor is going to be h.264 – great for distribution, not so great to edit with.

I’m not sure what you’re asking. Can you play the last 10 seconds of clip 1 while clip 2 is playing?
Yes, use V2 for Clip 2 and audio tracks 3+4.

I’ll tell you ANY intro book will be fine. If you exceed what any book on the market provides for information, you’re at the point where you’ll be able to make these sort of decisions more intelligently.

For the Aesthetics of video editing, I’d suggest Walter Murch’s “In the Blink of an Eye” and the “Technicque of Film Editing” by Karl Reisz.
