  • Mixing Diff Frame Rates & Resolution in Sequence?

Posted by Erika Brekke on May 26, 2011 at 7:59 pm

    Hi-

I’m new to working with different frame rates & resolution in one project & need some advice. I just inherited footage from 3 sources all shot differently and am editing in Final Cut 7.

Here’s a breakdown of the footage I have:

    1440×1080/29.97fps
    1280×720/59.94 fps
    960×720/59.94 fps

What’s the best way to get this footage uniform? Use Compressor for frame rate conversion & then re-import to FCP? Is it better to convert up or down? (Sorry, I’m new!) And is there a tutorial you recommend on that?

Finally, what’s the best codec to use? And should I be using the lowest res for a seq setting?

Sorry to be dense & thanks in advance!

    Start Here: 1440×1080/29.97fps

    Use that sequence.
Drop the others in and it will be fine.

Thanks, Chris. You’re right – it looked & played fine. As a general rule, should you always set the seq to the highest res? And why did the different frame rates not cause a problem in this instance? I’ve read tons of posts about marrying different frame rates & am trying to learn the science behind it. (I read you should always convert up, but in this case, I plopped the 59.94fps clips into a timeline set at 29.97 & everything seems/plays fine – including when I export.) Thanks again.

I’m simplifying here – but you’ll notice 59.94 is exactly twice of 29.97 – they mix beautifully. It’s mixing with PAL or 23.98 (truly different frame rates) that are painful.
