One year later have these issues been resolved? I have a four wall coming in and I need to rent a full blown Premiere on Mac Pro system with 12 core, 32 gig RAM, Quadro and Kona or Blackmagic capture card. Since we have little experience with Premiere systems I’m hoping things have gotten better – particularly with Kona cards since I already have one I could use if a rental is not available.
PS – can anyone recommend a vendor who rents such a system? Not having a lot of luck finding one.

That is one of the systems listed in the Avid list of qualified computers. Mine has a lower clock speed and I don’t know if that is a deal killer.

November 11, 2011 at 7:12 pm in reply to: Does MC 6 require the 64 bit kernel on Mac OSX LIon?I have a similar question. Looking at Avid’s specs for MC 6 they list the “Harpertown” Mac Pros as qualified, but only the 3.2 or 3.0 GHz versions. I have several of the “early 2008” 2.8 GHz versions. Is this just that Avid didn’t qualify my systems or is it that they flat out can’t run MC 6?

March 30, 2011 at 9:05 pm in reply to: Western Digital acquires Hitachi’s HDD business unitSo what brand and model of drives are best for creating an internal stripe in a Mac Pro? Or better yet, what characteristics should we look for in a drive for this application? What size buffer etc?

I’m having this exact same symptom on an Early 2008, 8 core Mac Pro. The differences are that the thing powers off on a Media Composer render or an After Effects render. It’s not a crash, the power just goes off a couple of seconds into the render. This is the second time this has happened. The first time I rebuilt the OS including a new drive. Didn’t exhibit the problem for months. Two weeks ago it started up again. It also will just freeze (screen visible, but no keyboard or mouse response) sometimes when it is idle.
I am actually leaning towards a hardware issue. Either graphics card or power supply. Maybe MOB. I’ve still got AppleCare on this one so I am planning to take it in.
Thoughts?

What would the appropriate codec be for DSLR footage?

I wonder if the destination codec makes a difference? We were going to ProRes 422 HQ.

We just test the plug-in on a Mac Pro, Snow Leopard, FCP 7 and it was slower than Compressor in creating ProRes clips. The only advantage we see for the plug-in is that it gives you some control over time code and clip names.

February 19, 2010 at 3:46 pm in reply to: ProRes 4444 won’t edit to tape General Error 88Aja felt that this was not a Kona or driver problem. I zapped PRAM and had the operator try again with the layoff. The clip brought to us from outside sources worked fine and we successfully made a layoff to HDCAM SR. I still have not been able to test the layoff of a clip we ingested at ProRes 4444 – maybe today.
I feel there might have been an operator issue as well here – perhaps the wrong easy setup was used, not sure. However, this computer has two systems drive: One with FCP 6 and one with FCP 7. I have noticed that on occasion that booting from one to the other is a little hinky. Maybe we should always zap PRAM when switching between the two boot volumes.
