We are transitioning our 5 FCP edit systems to Premiere Pro 5.5. It’s about time to replace our aging AJA Kona LHe cards and was looking for options about which video card is more PPro friendly.
AJA Kona 3G or BlackMagic Decklink Extreme 3D?
Feature for feature they seem comparable but the AJA is almost twice as expensive. Our Kona LHe’s barely worked with the PPro 5.5 demo and hope that newer generation cards have better performance.

    Jeff–

I have also been researching which vendor to go with for PrPro and it seems that at least Aja’s cards are still problematic with PrP, even with drivers having very recently been updated–see Walter Biscardi’s post here—

Buyer Beware with this app using these devices–

Sadly, so are BM cards. We’ve seen audio drop outs and playback stopping at numerous occasions, to the point where we use a DVI out for client monitor. One thing you pay for on the AJA side is much better support.

I don’t think BM would deny it and honestly, they couldn’t possibly afford it at that price point.

AJA has always cost more then BMD.
Quality wise, we can’t see a dif.

BMD does not play well with APP either. A bit disappointing.
We can only hope Adobe snaps to it for CS6

I also read that BM Cards have their problems with CUDA cards – but that`s just what I´ve heard – I didn`t try it myself. MY dealer recommended me the Matrox.

    Thanks for the feedback.
This is unfortunate. Considering how hard Adobe is pushing to get FCP users to switch you’d think they’d have helped AJA and BMD to write drivers that are as bullet proof as AJA and BMD’s FCP drivers.
We have 9 workstations we need to upgrade over the next year or so and it is hard to figure out if Adobe takes this stuff seriously. It’s obvious that Apple doesn’t anymore and Avid is too expensive.

    Hi Jeff,

and keep in mind – if you change your systems Mac Pro from earlier generations they don`t accept the current CUDA Cards. That`s the next thing what we discovered. If you want to use the QuadroFX 4000 for example you need min. a Mac Pro from generation 3.1. Means you probably have to change a lot of hardware without getting a mentionable improvenment from your machine (except the better performance from the CUDA card of course).

    Cheers
    Thomas.

We have MacPros with many different AJA Konas and we tried to make switch but at the moment AJA output is so buggy and laggy in Premiere Pro that we’ll definitely stay with Final Cut Pro 7 for some time and see how Premiere Pro (and Final Cut Pro X) develops.

I did the trial after FCPX came out and found PPro worked poorly with my early generation MacPro and BMD Decklink Studio card. Tried lots of troubleshooting, and thought I had the problems licked on several occasions, but never got it to work reliably. The trial expired and so did my patience.

    BUMP!

One year later have these issues been resolved? I have a four wall coming in and I need to rent a full blown Premiere on Mac Pro system with 12 core, 32 gig RAM, Quadro and Kona or Blackmagic capture card. Since we have little experience with Premiere systems I’m hoping things have gotten better – particularly with Kona cards since I already have one I could use if a rental is not available.

PS – can anyone recommend a vendor who rents such a system? Not having a lot of luck finding one.
