  • With what are you shooting? i.e., what’s your acquisition media?

  • I’d never shoot 30p and try and take frames out. Twixtor, Time and Nightmare renders.

    Shoot 24p.
    Capture 24p
    Edit 24p.
Use pull-down from the editor to record to 29.97i or
Record 24p on your deck and use the pull-down from the deck to do a dub to a 29.97i deck.

[Tom Wolsky] “The files really say .m2t?

    They say “.m2ts”

[Tom Wolsky] ” Where did they come from? What camera shot them?”

Good question. They did not supply that information.

[Tom Wolsky] ” Not if you don’t have the folder structure.”

What is the folder structure? i.e., what folders and files are suppose to be in there? Like in EX-XDCAM folders there is suppose to be certain files in the BPAV folder. If they’re not there, FCP won’t recognize the remaining. In a BPAV folder there is suppose to be two .XML files and a CLPR folder that has within it a folder for each clip. Inside that folder (e.g. “823_0091_01”) should be 5 files ending in MP4, SMI, PPN, SML, and BIM.

the .m2ts file opened in MPEG Streamclip without video and upon transcoding said it couldn’t find the first video frame. ClipWrap seemed to turn it into a .mov file viewable in FCP and Compressor. 3-to-1 in Compressor quick cluster to transcode to full frame ProRes.
I guess there’s no other way to do it without ClipWrap????

[Tom Wolsky] “If you have the wrapper that includes the mts files Final Cut will have no problem reading it. There is absolutely no reason and no excuse for the MPEG stream being separated from its folder structure.”

What is the proper structure? What files should be in the folder? Client just delivered to me a folder full of .m2ts and .m2ts.modd and .m2ts.moff files, but FCP Log and Transfer gives a Warning says the file “…contains unsupported media or has an invalid directory structure. Please choose a folder whose directory structure matches supported media.”

Episode burps on the m2ts file saying the h.264 is high profile and is unsupported.

I re-rendered with the frame controls set to “Best” and everything looks good now.
    Thank you Shane and Paul.

I’m converting to SD because half of my footage is SD. Deliverable is web only which we’ll do at 16×9.

I’m pretty sure in Frame Controls I looked at changing all the settings to Best, but didn’t see any difference in Compressor’s Preview window between the settings. The ProRes side of the split screen looked soft and jaggy.

Should I have seen a difference in the Preview window? (monitoring a split screen between orig and downconverted codec settings)
Or would I not see the difference until it output the movie?

“go to where you want to paste the pose/animation on the timeline, and select “Append Preset” from the Object Animations menu”

I go to where I want to paste the pose on the timeline, and select “Append Preset” from the Camera Animations menu, but it doesn’t put the pose where I am on the timeline. Instead it puts the pose at the end of the timeline.

    Am I doing this correctly?

  • [Helge Tjelta] “My ProRes 4444 file only shows alpha/tranparency when canvas is set to best and NOT normal…!”

    Thank you for that tip.

MacBookPro 2.6 GHz Core 2 Duo
    Running FCS 3
    OS 10.5.8
    QT Player 7.6.4

When I drop my ProRes4444 movie file onto a track in a FCP 3 (7.0.2) timeline, the movie keys just fine as expected.
When I do the same in Motion (4.0.2), I just get black as the background. UNTIL I set my Render/Quality to “Best”, then it keys just fine as expected.
