    Are you upgraded to 10.5.2?

Looks like you have the 2004 eMac. Double check this page to make sure I got that right:

    https://www.apple-history.com/

Just double-checking. But if so, all that confirms is that you’re correct. You can only use two 512 chips in that machine. Anything more will not be recognized by the system.

Use the pull-down menu here to find your eMac:

Looks like it should run you about $33.

I’ve run every update possible on my laptop. No problems with anything and I’ve been using Final Cut and After Effects on it a fair amount.

It 10.5.2 also fixed a bunch of wireless problems I was having too. I was only able to connect to the internet 50% of the time with 10.5.1, but it seems perfectly fine now.

Obviously, I don’t have any 3rd party hardware on my laptop, so I can’t say it’s safe for everyone here, but I haven’t found any problems with the OS itself.

I agree with Zane. Edit in HD.

Then, for DVD just compress the HD directly to MPEG II. For tape output, convert the final project.

The only time I’d ignore this advice is if you’re doing something like (for example) shooting 20 hours of confrence panels at a convention and they want all 20 hours delivered in SD with minimal editing.

But outside of that, most projects are going to have far shorter masters than all the source footage is. Converting it at the very end shouldn’t be that big of a problem considering the advantages it gets you.

When you say “need to master in SD” do you mean:

    1) You have no HD monitors or a computer that can handle editing HD and thus must edit SD all the time.

    or

    2) You’ll mostly edit in HD but may have the occasional need for an SD project for some specific reason.

Make sure you keep all files under 2 GB. The drive won’t accept anything higher in that format.

If that proves difficult for your project, you could format it as a Mac drive and buy this for the PC person:

I always thought you needed a program like Toast to burn Blu-Ray discs. I didn’t think Finder supported it. (I know DVD Studio Pro doesn’t.)

Is FastMac saying otherwise? I’m not saying I’m correct, but if they ARE saying that Finder can burn Blu-Rays, it’s news to me.

February 11, 2008 at 9:55 pm in reply to: repairing OS X through a network?

Maybe, but at this point I wouldn’t trust it.

I’d use the network to get all my files out, wipe the drive, install the OS and then put the files back.

It will take time, yes, but I get very nervous about fixing problems as serious as the one you have. I just keep wondering if I’ve fixed the actual problem or merely the symptom (in which case it may return someday).

BUT, it may be worth taking to an Apple store. If they can find a problem I’d trust their solution more than my own trouble-shooting. That might work, but may take longer than my first plan!

It always comes down to portability. Desktops will always offer more power-per-dollar. So if you need portability, get the laptop. If not, the desktop.

It’s clear you understand this, but it has to be said: It doesn’t matter what WE think.

Once you decide that issue we can help you with specifics, but no one here can tell you if portability matters or not for you.

(The only factor might be if you need some kind of capture card that’s only available for towers. But since you’re currently using a Powerbook, that’s clearly not an issue for you.)
