If he used Compressor, and DVDSP metadata was enabled, then I’m 99.9% sure he’s on a Mac. Does Ulead have Mac versions of their software?

What you want is called “buttons over video” and it is not currently supported in Encore.
As a workaround, if you have less than 1 GB of content (about 15-20 minutes of material), you can use motion menus to accomplish the task.

Encore doesn’t support HD-DVD encoding – it accepts SD DVD compliant files and Blu-Ray disc compliant files.
For HD-DVD you will need DVDSP.

How was the .m2v file encoded? What software was used and what were the encoding settings?

First, I would burn an RW disc to see if it is just a preview issue.
Seocnd, if possible, please post screenshots of:
1. A template menu in the menu viewer that shows the side stripes.
2. A custom menu of yours from Photoshop in the menu viewer that shows the side stripes.
3. Any menu that comes back from Photoshop looking “letterboxed” in the menu viewer.
4. The transition video where the menu fills the screen.
Make sure all of the Menu Viewer controls are visible in the screenshots.

What codec was used to create the .avi file?
What format is your audio (PCM, MPEG, Dolby Digital)?

You can try two things at first:
1. In Edit>Preferences>Media, clean the Media Cache Database.
2. Reset Encore’s preferences. The easiest way to do this is to delete the “AppPreferences.xml” file, which can be found under “C:\Documents and Settings\
\Application Data\Adobe\Adobe Encore\3.0″. Encore will rebuild the preferences from scratch the next time you launch the program. Let us know if either one helps.
