It takes its toll mostly on the Media Cache Database, and also on Encore’s cached files and transcoded source files (like you get when you render a motion menu).
Many changes in a large project can wreak a little bit of havoc on the database and on the xml files used to store the Encore project and other info.
Trying to clean those things up using the tools provided in Encore is the best place to start.
More advanced micro-surgery on the project files is also sometimes required.
If all else fails, a rebuild of the project from scratch can fix just about anything. That’s not as scary as it seems once all the design decisions are made and the final versions of the assets are in place.

Actually my “solution” was just the first step of troubleshooting. I suspected that there may have been previews built, assets changed and then previews re-built. I was trying to get you to clean up any old transcodes and/or file indexing from the changed assets (if there were any changes).

Do a Save As and give your project a new name. Then try this:
1. Delete the transitions from the menu buttons.
2. Delete the assets that make up the transitions from the Project panel.
3. First clean, and then delete, the media cache database. (Edit>Preferences>Audio/Video Out.
4. Save and close Encore.
5. Restart Encore and re-import your transition assets.
6. Add the transitions again.
7. Build and test your project. To test it on a DVD, make sure to use an RW disc so you don’t make any coasters.-Jeff

Once you have the Menu Properties exposed, click on the Project tab of the Project panel to make the audio asset available to the pickwhip.
The Menu properties sheet should still be exposed after you do that.

Nope. Not encountered it before.
DVD Recorders are oddities. Many non-spec implementations of things to keep you locked into one brand.
To circumvent this particular issue, you could add a 5-second timeline with black video or a logo as a new first play, then link to your “old” first play (which I assume is a menu).

What is the duration of your audio and video for the menu? Compare that to the loop point of the menu.

Did the transition execute properly in Encore’s preview?
Have you tested the burned disc on more than one player?

What version of Encore?
If CS3, then PAL 720×576 (1.42) is the correct size to use in Photoshop. If it looks terrible, where does it look terrible? PS? Encore? Encore’s preview? Burned disc? All of the above?
And could you please define “dodgy”? 🙂

Proper burn speed and quality media are your best bets.

That’s why I suggested .avi or .mov out of Avid. Encore’s automatic transcoding does all of those calculations for you. First time. No hassle.
And there is no hard 7 Mbps bit rate limit in Encore – you can set its max transcoding bit rate up to 9 Mbps if you want.
If your 7 Mbps limit is self-imposed, then that’s OK. You will still get excellent results using Encore’s automatic transcoding.
