A software DVD player is something like PowerDVD or WinDVD. If you don’t have one of those installed, then Windows Media Player becomes the default player for DVDs.

When you did that, what program was Windows using to show you the menu?

I just use the Duplicate function (Ctrl+D), or I Alt+Drag a button to duplicate it.
You need to reset the link for the duplicated button(s).

For buttons that need to be exactly the same size, I create the first button, then duplicate it.
See if View | New Guide, Object | Align and Object | Distribute give you the positioning precision you seek.
If these methods aren’t workable for you, then it’s off to Photoshop! 🙂

There is a way.
1. Link a video thumbnail button to a chapter in your timeline. The button has to have a layer designated with the prefix (%).
2. On the Menu Properties panel, Motion tab, check the Animate Buttons option.
3. Set a poster frame for the chapter to determine where the video in the button should start.

Can you post a screenshot of your Menu viewer with the problem menu loaded and the Show Button Routing button selected?

Per the DVD spec (and not just Encore), a button highlight is a 2-bit, 4-color graphic. You can’t use a normal image as a highlight.
To get what you want, you need to fool the audience. Set up a series of duplicate menus and use the Auto-activate property of the buttons.
The first menu would have the baseball graphic showing next to the first button. Link that to whatever asset or chapter is appropriate.
The next button (as determined by the button routing setup) should link to a second menu that is a duplicate of the first menu. When the audience navigates to the next button using the arrow keys on the DVD player remote control, the auto-activate feature takes them to the duplicate menu, where the baseball is now shown next to the second button. On this menu, the second button now links to whatever asset or chapter is appropriate.
And so on. Make sure you use a hand-drawn flowchart to help you set up this complicated navigation scheme, or you will easily get lost.
Caveat: although this technique works on hardware DVD players, it won’t work on software DVD players when the mouse is used to navigate instead of the cursor on the remote control.

Thanks for posting all of that. I don’t know why you’d see this issue with CS4.
Can you try setting the (=1) layer names to (=3) layer names and see if that makes any difference?
And although I don’t think it’s a blank-media-quality issue, if you’re not using Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim blanks you should try one of those brands.
And if you’re burning at the full rated speed of either the media or the burner, slow it down to 1/2 the rated speed of the slowest one.

Are you using the combination of En CS3 and Leopard? That combo causes highlights to go missing, except that sometimes an (=3) highlight layer will work.
Reverting to using En CS3 and Tiger is the fix.
Other than that, I don’t have any idea what’s going on. I’ve never seen that behavior before.
