It’s possible that Encore’s preview is smurfing the playback because of the 24 fps vs. 30 fps thing.
Burn an RW disc and see if the disc plays normally in a hardware and/or software DVD player.

When you encode the 24p footage in Squeeze, make sure to set closed GOPs and change the GOP I-frame distance to 12 frames instead of 15. Do not set 24 fps or progressive field order in Squeeze; SS will figure it out correctly and soft telecine your 24p footage.
Using these settings, I’ve imported SS MPEG2 24p files into En for the last 2 versions (CS3 and CS4) without En wanting to re-transcode.

The demuxed audio is AC3, right?
The AC3 audio from a long DVD will take several minutes to conform once it is imported into Encore. AC3 (or other compressed audio) won’t play back until conforming is complete.
If you tried to scrub and play the timeline towards the middle or end of the clip, you may not have waited long enough.

How did you get the video off of the DVD? If you used a ripping program you should have been able to rip to M2V and WAV/AC3 files. The M2V from the rip shouldn’t need to be re-transcoded in Encore, and it should be the same size (or a little smaller) that it was on the DVD.

That feature is called “Buttons Over Video” and it’s not available in Encore.

Conventional wisdom dictates that you keep your 24 fps footage at 24 fps all the way through editing, export and encoding. The change in frame rate from 24 fps to 60 fps is almost certainly causing the problem.
Is there a reason you switched to 60 fps?
