Thanks, Jeremy. I have one more question, maybe you know the answer: I cannot ‘eject’ the RAID on my desktop as I’ve always been able to do with other external drives.
Is this because it’s a RAID or because it’s eSata? How can I safely shut down the RAID without shutting down the computer? Just turn it off using it’s On/Off switch?

I looked in the manual and it doesn’t say anything about shutting down the array… typical, eh?

(Who wants to join me in a film about manuals?)

[JeremyG] “That ‘s the traditional way to do it. Keep all of your media, JPGs, audio, video, everything that needs to be played back in an FCP timeline on your raid.

    Jerem”

And (where) do you save backups of your FCP docs?

November 8, 2007 at 8:00 pm in reply to: What are the most cost effective RAID-5 options?

[Luminosity] “I don’t recall where, but somewhere I found a hardware raid-5 enclosure that had eSata, Firewire 800 and Firewire 400 interfaces and was portable. I think it was a 5 drive enclosure.”

I just got the LaCie Biggest Quadra, which is a 4 drive array with eSata, FW800 & 400. RAID 5, 0, 0&1, 5plusSpare optional configs. It is almost half the price of whatever RAID5 solution I was able to find, here in Europe under 1200,- for the 2TB version, including the PCI-E card. In the US prices are often much better.

Thanks, Tom. Just got back from the shop where I picked up the Quadra, in addition to a LaCie SATA II 3Gb/s card.

Leave the firewire for capture! I feel very rich…

[Todd at UCSB] “Is it going to be as stable? probably, but adding any card, drive, device-anything to your system makes it slightly less stable, due to the fact that more devices now need to boot up and run correctly”

This is exactly what I had in mind when I asked the question- yet another device hooked up to the Mac that can cause conflict. I had read some story about a RAID not showing up after a software update and then I thought that the whole reason I want a RAID is to have a more solid and safe editing system and I felt perhaps bringing in this RAID-tower was like welcoming a Trojan Horse…

Just curious to hear how it may affect my system. Thanks for the response.
