February 14, 2012 at 4:36 pm in reply to: LT05 with OSX – Is there a straightforward solution?I sent an inquiry to the support team for Retrospect for Mac. I asked if they supported the Quantum Scalar i40 over Fibre and Quantum Superloader3 over SAS with LTO5 drives installed. They responded yes to both. I have not tried either of these setups myself, but I am looking at making a purchase of a Quantum Library in the very near future and I am trying to decided between LTO4 and LTO5 myself.
You can probably contact both Retrospect for Mac and Quantum to verify and inquire about your setup. I don’t know where you buy your gear, but if it’s some place like CDW then they at times can test configurations to confirm. But not always. I’m not sure what the dependancies are on that.

February 10, 2012 at 6:56 pm in reply to: Using a LUT post VFX on Apple Pro Res 422, originally shot on an Arri AlexaWhere did you get the file for AlexICC? Generally they are LUT files that have been converted to ICC files. So there should be a regular LUT file somewhere. Get that to the VFX artist in the proper format and they should be able to apply it when rendering.
If you used one of the generic ICC profiles with AlexICC then you need to find a comparable LUT. You can probably make one. Try using the Arri LUT generator on their website. Go to
https://www.arri.com/camera/digital_cameras/tools/lut_generator.html
and select get started at the bottom. Get that LUT to the VFX artist.

Thank you,

August 24, 2011 at 12:02 am in reply to: Split and Add not working as I think it should?Ok, I do that, and that’s cool. Then I go back to Media Composer. Make a few changes, trims only, and then export a new EDL of that. Then take that EDL to Resolve and in that same project I go into conform where I have the master session based on the first EDL and I use Preconform to bring in the second EDL.
About 2/3 of the clips show no media associate and the ones that do are all off and many have wrong media. If I use Load EDL then every clip in the new session is off-line.
There really needs to be a much better explanation of this whole process in the manual. They make is sound really easy, and it’s not. And while I may not be the brightest guy in the world, I’m not that stupid. Really, I’m not. Am I?
Thank you for any clarification that anyone can provide.

I know that happens too, but not having tired a card from a different vendor to see if the same thing happens with their card I can’t say that it would be the fault of the Kona card. FCP is in control of the capture and from what I can tell it’s just using QuitkTime to do the capture. I would be more suspecting of QuickTime being the culprit of capturing media beyond the specified range. If you use VTR Exchange that is from AJA then the QTs do not have the extra frames. So I really don’t think that is the fault of the card.

We are using a Promise Vtrak. Raid0, Dual Buss config. I did talk to AJA, but they had no answers. But I don’t see where it would be their fault. It seems more like a Quicktime or Final Cut problem. Have not talked to Apple. But planning on move to Smoke.

Nope, still having the problem. My workaround is to put a graphic over the entire timeline and then reposition that graphic off screen. Then render the entire timeline as a single quicktime. Then I don’t have the problem since where the frames get added is always at the head of a shot where the system stops reading one file and starts reading another file. One file, no problem.
But I think our real solution is going to be Smoke on a windows system. Already have it in, just need to get the time to get up to speed on it.

Cool, I would love to check that out.
And I also want to add that I did download the latest software demo from Light Illusion and I now find it easy to understand and use. Especially for converting the format of the LUT. It probably has more to do with me understanding more about LUTs then it does to anything else.

I was kind of hoping that since it should be just a generic curve for viewing that there would already be a version out there in the format I need. The last time I looked at the Light Illusion tools I was totally baffled. I downloaded the demo and could barely figure out where to begin. As far as I know I probably didn’t even get that right.
Thanks though.

Yea, ArriRaw sounds very cool. With the Codex transfer station for extracting to different formats. Very nice. We were told it should be working on the Alexa very soon, but that “very soon” is about half way through our next production. Thank you again for all the insight.
