  • Ok… so since you in the helping mode. 🙂

Any ideas on how to make an expression that would make the shadow blur and fade the further up in Y space the object is is? In other words, when the object is not close to the floor, I’d like the shadow to blur and the opacity to fade. If that’s too much to ask, I understand.

What I have is a 3D fountain pen that is writing out some text. I created a shadow using a black solid (in the shape of the pen. A little radial blur and some soft subtract masks have done the trick. I figured I’d hand animate those fade properties, but an expression would save me some work.

I really wish I was more left brained and could grasp expressions better.

    Thanks!

  • Thanks Kevin,

You’re correct. I had my Xes, Ys and Zs mixed up. I’m going to hold on to this expression. I think I’ll be using this technique a lot.

I ended up separating the X, Y, Z. dimensions and linking just the X and Z. The expression is nicer for sure and I’ll be trying that on the next one.

    I appreciate it!

You’re right. Quicktime is lying. When I bring it back into AE it shows as 720×486.

I wonder why QT is lying to me all of a sudden. Maybe some kind of upgrade I applied.

The strange thing is that files I export from Quicktime appear the correct size when I reopen them in Quicktime.

    Thanks for your post.

    Hmmm…

Well, the footage says it’s .91, and I created all of the comps by dragging the clip over the comp icon, so it should be using the same specs as the clip.

I am checking the renders in Quicktime. It says:

    Format Animation, 720 x 486 (654 x 486) Millions

    Normal Size: 654 x 486
    Current Size 654 x 486 (Actual)

I’ve never had this problem. All of my renders are coming out 654 x 486. I’ve been re-exporting using Quicktime to make them the correct size again.

  • Thanks Dave,

Yes, I’ve tried that first, but it only seems to let you loop if you ram preview the whole comp.

I need to start at about 5 or 10 seconds toward the end, and see the loop point at the beginning. I can nest it in a new comp, but I thought if I could figure that out, it would save me some steps.

    I appreciate your response.

Thanks for your response. It’s gives me hope for moving that direction should I decide to. Thankfully right now I’m not in the heat of any projects. I have time to decide.

I appreciate your feedback. I tried Final Cut back when it first came out and hated it. I have a lot of friends that use it and love it, but it seems very cumbersome to me. Media 100 is sleek, easy to use, and powerful. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not dogging on Media 100. I love the program.

I just find it tough to afford the upgrades on a regular basis. 12.7 was working perfect for me, even though it wasn’t the latest and greatest. I probably would have eventually upgraded, but right now it’s not in the budget.

I do have a time machine backup, and I’m considering going back. Just not sure yet.

I’ve been doing a lot more AE work than I have video work this year, so I just wasn’t thinking. Believe me, I realize what a bad idea it was.

Part of me definitely wishes I could go back, but the reality is that I also want to keep fairly up to date OS wise, and it sounds like Media 100 isn’t going to go back and release any patches for older versions, so I’m out of luck either way.

This is why I’m thinking (as painful as it might be) I might need to just move to Final Cut. I would think Apple would keep that app working with the OS w/o the need for constant upgrades.

And for what it’s worth, sharing mistakes are sharing info. I wanted to help others avoid what I did.

I love Media 100. Always have. It’s a great editor. I’ve stuck with it for 12 years now. It’s a tough decision to move away from it.
