  • What I usually do, and what I did here at about :08 into the video https://vimeo.com/66477211 is make a grid in Illustrator and copy that into AE. Make sure you’re copying just the squares of the grid. I think AI creates the grid with an outline around the whole thing.

    Oops, you’re right! I forgot to put the tex file in there. I think I figured out a solution for now. With Riptide export, which I’m using to export the OBJ sequence, you can export materials. You can’t use the MTL file in Element, but suddenly now all the individual materials are present so I can reapply them in there. It’s a little more work, but it works. I believe I’ve tried what you’re talking about Darby, but I went ahead and did it again just to see and Element sees the texture as a big old mess still.

    Skin deformer on or off doesn’t seem to make a difference to the resulting baked texture.

    Not at all. Inside the Element UI there is a set of primitive models for you to use. Select a plane. Then on its material, scroll all the way down and you’ll notice an option for “matte shadow”. Before you set that option, however, it helps to set up the plane in the right position before because otherwise it’s invisible. It acts like a track matte, but it works in the 3d space with Element. Make sure the plane covers everything you’re trying to reveal by sizing it accordingly, then go back into the Element UI and turn on the matte shadow option on the plane material. Now it should cover everything up that’s behind it and you can simply animate it back in space to reveal the extrusion.

    Simple answer: matte shadow. Use a plain as a matte shadow. Line it up so that it’s just behind the text and then animate it backwards in space to reveal the extrusion.

    You’re all thinking of this too mathematically. While Ease & Whiz will get you 90% of what you want in most cases, controlling that sneaky slow ease in and snap at the end is a matter of keyframing magic, which really isn’t all that magical.

    In the first 10 frames of the animation you have the shape or mask animate out about 10%, enough to iniate the motion. Move ahead 3 frames and animate about 90% of the rest of the animation, maybe 85 if you want more soft easing at the end. Then move ahead 10 more frames and add a keframe and finish the rest of the reveal. After you have your keyframes in place (all linear at this point), make the first and last key frame easy ease. Go to the graph editor and drag out the ease to 100% on the first and last keyframe. On the two keyframes right next to each other, pull the handles all the way in so there is no ramp (shouldn’t need to bother with the handles between the 2 keyframes, just between the first and 2nd, and 3rd and 4th). Here’s an example attached.

  • This might get really confusing then. If the two guys aren’t moving around much, I’d start by drawing a mask over the bar and set the mask to subtract. Just hit the M key on your keyboard twice to quickly open the mask properties. Click on the box where it says Add and it will drop down a menu, select Subtract. That will make the pole go away. Now you’ll need to key frame the mask points or anchor points so it doesn’t cover up the two guys – I’m sure they’re not moving perfectly still. Set a keyframe on Mask Path, and then just go about keyframing the position of the mask points.
