    Hi Jeremy,

I can stripe just using the deck but it doesn’t solve the issue with FCP.
The other problem with using the deck alone is that when I stripe using the deck I am not getting matching VITC and LTC even though TCG is set to follow LTC. That will trigger a rejection.

I’ve called the deck house, the configuration on the deck is correct for VITC to follow LTC but it’s not working.

These machines make me feel stupid.

    It’s a HDCam tape inside of a HDWF500, connected to a Matrox MX02, RS422 Sony 23.98 deck control,

  • Sorry it took so long to respond.

    Like a year.

Yes, it helped. HQ sequences should be output at HQ, same with non HQ sequences.

  • FCP 6.05 on OS 10.5.5. IO HD 6.02 on an 8-core 2.8ghz Mac Pro with 10gb of RAM.

I just talked with Aja and they told me that FCP introduces the pulldown from 1080p23.98 to 1080i29.97, that the IO doesn’t do it. Again, FCP inserts the 3:2 pulldown on playback, not the IO.

    See below for a sample.

We are testing the non-HQ playback setting per Aja’s advice to see if that helps.

  • Indeed, the field dominance on the movie (but not the sequence) was set to upper in spite of them being captured progressively.

Funny how that was fixed in the IO’s software update just TODAY.

I’ve flipped that flag back to NONE on the movie but it still seems to be exhibiting the issue.

These were stock CG that had been conformed, so as a workaround we applied a flicker filter (max), then rendered the clips out at 75% speed with frame blending, then brought them back up and sped them back up to full speed, in hopes that this would mask any artifacts in the original conform that might be tripping up the pulldown insertion on the IO. It pretty much fixed it but there is a lingering issue on one field.

Tomorrow we’ll try recapturing the tapes with the firmware/driver updated, and see how it goes.

  • Just wanted to update this re: exporting with the proper pulldown to sate your curiosity, in case it was still active.

It wasn’t exported from FCP at all, we used compressor to take a 23.98 movie to 59.94.

    Mystery solved.

  • Yup, that’s terrific.

When the dust settles I’ll be calling about the IO.

    Thanks for spreading the news.

  • Hi Jeremy,

I’m not sure where it’s set, but the rendered movie has 3:2 pulldown. I have the system set up with 2:3:2:3 in the System Settings>Playback Control (on the online system only) but it doesn’t seem to me that setting would affect how pulldown would be rendered into a movie. We use 2:2:2:4 in other suites for snappier playback.

Funnily, the first time I went out to tape with Final Cut doing the pulldown via the Matrox MXO2, it laid down 2:2:2:4, because I hadn’t found the preset that used 3:2 pulldown (hidden in a drop-down menu BELOW the menu where you select pulldown pattern), in spite of the above playback setting.

    Jared

  • OK, tell me who to thank, because it worked. I am a happy man.

Now, I just have to get that video out working on the IO HD again…
