Final Cut Pro inserts wonky timecode

It’s a HDCam tape inside of a HDWF500, connected to a Matrox MX02, RS422 Sony 23.98 deck control,

And your deck is setup for 23.98 psf? Where is the deck set to grab tc from? Why Black and code from FCP? Why not just use the deck and do a little stripe, then use FCP to assemble from an hour, or whatever you need?

Hi Jeremy,

I can stripe just using the deck but it doesn’t solve the issue with FCP.
The other problem with using the deck alone is that when I stripe using the deck I am not getting matching VITC and LTC even though TCG is set to follow LTC. That will trigger a rejection.

I’ve called the deck house, the configuration on the deck is correct for VITC to follow LTC but it’s not working.

These machines make me feel stupid.

OK…I had this issue. When I had a PAL sequence setting and EASY SETUP (I forgot to switch back to NTSC ProRes 1080i) I would type in a number and a completely different one would appear. So…make sure that your Easy Setup is set proper to match what you are outputting, and that your VIEW>EXTERNAL is also set to match what you are outputting. Same frame rate…

As for FCP, my instinct is that something isn’t setup properly for you in the deck.

I have seen that too and in this case everything matches (easy setup, deck control, etc).

So here’s an interesting set of facts – perhaps related.
The deck panel displays timecode as 24 frame timecode.
FCP is set up for Deck control 23.98 Sony RS422
However when I use deck control to jog/shuttle through the tape via FCP, the timecode display in final cut is giving me 29.97 timecode.
The panel reads 58:02:08; Final Cut ETT window reads 58:05:26

Timecode convert in the deck is set to OFF
Timecode read is set to OFF TAPE

I pray to the deck gods to send me an answer.

Here is something else interesting.

The MXO2 doesn’t come with a 23.98 deck control preset. I’m going to hop over to the Matrox forum and see if that has something to do with it. Maybe it’s just not supported.

Still doesn’t explain the mismatched timecode on the deck, but that’s a whole other issue.
