Thanks for the help. Yup…we’ve got a bunch of extra harddrives around here (5 at last count)and am planning to get an SATA one that he can use (7200 rpm) with the new machine. (has an eSATA port).
I’m afraid I’m going to stick with the ASUS. We travel fulltime, so a “local shop” which I agree would be good, won’t help us in the longrun.
His gear is in trade for “my gear”…photo equipment…so we’re even .

Ooops? Cineform Neo? Is that what he’ll need to do the HD? Isn’t Vegas (shall upgrade to V8 it looks like) enough?
Can you burn HD video to a dual layer DVD?

Sorry for the newbie questions, but it’s his birthday and I don’t want to get him something useless, but at the same time, I do want to help him use his new HD tapes right away.

Just curious…what laptop did you get and what kind of video card is with it? I’m buying my hubby a new laptop within the next week or so and am considering an Asus G2S-B1 but it has Vista vs the more expensive one that has Vista Ultimate. Not sure what will be “easiest” for my hubby to use with his video editing which is what this particular laptop will be confined to doing. He’s not patient with computer problems….has Vegas 6 and will be using it for HD (from his new Canon HD camcorder.) Glad you found it had no problems.

We’ve had the camcorder for a month and have been very pleased with it for the price and size. We opted to try it since it’s more portable than a larger 3CCD camcorder would have been. It really does great. We tested it against our “old” Canon Optura xi and found the colors, clarity, and the sensitivity of the light meter were excellent. We looked at the footage on a 50″ plasma screen against our friends’ professional tapes made with a VERY expensive HD Sony, and found it really a great match…considering we paid a LOT less. The small size might also be a problem since the buttons are small and possibly difficult for men to use, but we’ve gotten used to it. The sound quality is also better than the Optura.
    We’re happy with it.
