From where I stand, this is the most egregious and most underhanded card Apple played here. Not informing their users or even simply informing us on the potential of this move completely ripped the fabric of trust. I just went through enormous expense setting up the tools necessary and training towards Color in the last year, thousands of my own personal expense, with no indication this year that this was the game plan. I’ve been told by a certain blogger here my feelings on the matter were that Apple “wronged me”, which of course I take considerable exception to. They didn’t wrong me, they misled us on every level.
The irony of it all is, I tried to move towards DaVinci before going down the Color road simply because I had a feeling that Apple would pull the rug out from under us with this release (given their history), but my *feelings* couldn’t trump the workflow most others I would be working with built around Apple over the years who were also now sadly misled….killing this stinks more than any other in the Studio package…

No, I got that…but it’s still a confusing argument…it’s not like mac’s are suddenly 300$ too….so if he could have got studio before for roughly the same amount…ahh forget it, it makes the mind go numb

PPro CS5 stands right next to Final Cut Pro 7 in almost every way and better…So i’m totally confused…were they running CS3 or 1.5? If so, again, upgrading would have been just as cheap and you’d be getting a program that is light years ahead of FCX…so why apologize…?
Good god…imagine….they could have upgraded to Pro-grade software like CS5.5 for the same price but got X and tried to pawn that off to students that it was a “pro” app…a lot of fresh young minds would warp…exactly what Apple wants I guess…

It’s not rosy. And it’s not just Hollywood Studios.
This is just my opinion, a freelancer can easily match/lower bid, vfx work than bulk shots heading to China or Bangkok for smaller projects, and once you have enough experience move into visual effects producing. They can’t easily ship that overseas, but they might ship you on a per project basis.
I wouldn’t discourage you, it’s fun and a fantastic skill and opportunities will come as fast as they go, but I wouldn’t say it’s a burgeoning industry here anymore. It’s becoming an assembly line/cookie cutter process overseas, much like celluloid animation became. I was once told if you knew After Effects or Nuke you’d never be out of work…but I think that time has passed. The argument always circles back to “how good and fast” you are…but when you can send a project overseas, do 13-18 technical revisions on a shot that is only costing you 1000$…good and fast kinda goes out the window..
As for the future of the industry, I haven’t read that article yet, but it would become dependent on scale, retention, contraction, tax credits etc. I’ve wanted to set up a small scale effects house specializing in specific elements. But I’d probably have to move to Vancouver where the tax credit structure is financially capable of bidding on projects destined for overseas…I’ve heard Cali still being competitive, but usually thats only because they have a team in China lol

I fully agree! My sarcasm already noted by another, this was just a short list of the boiler plate squawking a “few” of us have had to contend with…now, after a week of all of us seeing how flawed this platform is, and how disingenuously Apple rolled out their product and the way they responded to the much deserved criticism’s, seeing Abobe and Avid step up….I think it’s time to permanently retire the pejoratives and patronizing content from the defenders…who still have many points and opinions worthy of debate, I just think we need to discard the tired old patronizing spin and appreciate the OP for acknowledging our thoughts and voices without derision….I only brought them here to tear them down, once and for all… 😉

It’s a revolution paradigm evolution. Apple is on the cutting edge, it’s only the beginning. 1.0. You just want things 90% don’t use! It’s all there for you, they just moved it and you’re too lazy to look! Or you don’t “get it”. Underneath it’s more powerful than a hightech super locomotive with magnetic rails!! They also disingenuously told people this would be a replacement to FCS and the pros weren’t being left behind during the rumourfest surrounding the supermeet…people were right to have suspicions, but they tried to dismiss them knowing full well what they were unleashing…
