Thought I would stop by and contribute my experience and my ultimate bizarre-yet-simple solution to this maddening problem.

First, I could not get Michael’s solution to work, since the Qmaster preference pane refuses to launch. I just get stuck in a perpetual loop and it tells me “To use Apple Qmaster preferences pane, System Preferences must quit and reopen.” Upon clicking ok, it closes. On manually reopening, it just pops up the same alert. Repeat. Now I have to hit cancel to get out of this mind-numbing loop. Yes, I’ve tried opening system prefs in 32-bit mode. Nada.

Also, Mark’s solution didn’t work – while the the batch DID stop, it sat and thought for about 10 seconds, then just started over. Nice. So, here’s the answer:

Follow Mark’s advice and go to Compressor -> Reset Background Processing -> Reset and Cancel Jobs. THEN, when you see it pause in the History panel, immediately hit the “Clear” button at the bottom. Now it will disappear and never bother you again! If you aren’t quick enough, it will restart, and you’ll have to repeat the steps in this paragraph.

Hope this helps someone – this problem made me crazy!
