is there any technical reason to render with fields on? Any time I have the “judder” problem it gets incredibly worse if I render with fields, especially for something like credits on black video.

One way would be to add motion blur to your layer. By click the motion blur check box on the layer and then the motion blur globals in you comp window you will have added motion blur.

The only other way I can think of is when you render out leave the fields set to Off, so that it renders progressively.

I found it easier to understand After Effects after I understood Photoshop. Most users come straight from using Premiere and when they encounter layers and precomping, become a little confused. Since After Effects works in layers along with a timeline, I try to tell people After Effects is the powerful offspring of Photoshop and Premiere. As Jonathan said somethings like blending modes and effects are present in both apps, but it’s the other things like keyframes, cameras, and the wiggler 😉 that make AE what it is.

Still by no means do you have to know Photoshop first. I learned AE from the Total Training DVD set. A bit long but it explains everything you could want to know as a new user.

The “3d” lines you are seeing is from a plug-in called Trapcode 3D Stroke. I know of no other way to accomplish that type of effect, which Trapcode plug-in are known for being able to do.

If you do get the plug-in (demo is available from the website) it is relativley easy to accomplis this.
First create a solid and use the pen tool to make a path, open/closed doesn’t matter. Then apply the 3D stroke effect. Now to get it to look 3D you have to create a new camera, but do not turn the stroke layer into a 3D layer. It is just how the effect works, it simulates 3D in a 2D view.

Next, you can change the position and other things by changing 3D Stroke properties, but also it you really want to get crazy move the camera around and watch your stroke change. It’s really cool if you make it look like it is heading for the camera.

On the layer you want to be alpha’d, look for the blending modes drop down, next to it should be another drop down box with aplha and luma options. Try one of those options.

If you can’t find the blending modes and you do have the 5 check boxes column (motion blur, 3d, etc.) click on the top of that column and the it will change. It’s kind of vague, but without AE open I’m playing by memory.

Some of the best classes are not really classes at all. Check out Total Training for AE. If you willing to spend a little over $500,this is the way to go. I think it’s like 14 DVD’s and covers a ton.
