I use GIMP and another program called inkscape. For the price they work really well! Nice to have an option when I dont need any power user bits.

That said, some of GIMP’s ideas and tools I find a bit strange. Inkscape uses PC shortcuts on a mac which is frustrating at first. Still, free software and all that

Agreed, Apple certainly aren’t the first to pull the rug out.

I was talking more about the confluence of poor marketing and uncertainty making it hard to justify a switch over?

[Frank Gothmann] “[Craig Seeman] “Apple must make a “professional” push to show how the combination is worth a six or seven figure secure investment for a facility.”

They’ve shown already that it is not a secure investment. With both soft- and hardware. We needed two more machines and employed a new guy full-time last month. I am in Europe. If we had not gone PC last year I would have been forced to look on Ebay for a Mac Pro because I need PCIe connectivity. Very secure.”

    Exactly!

    Also from the write-up

” But to use it effectively, you have to change your workflow. In a multi-editor, multi-production facility, this means changing a lot of practices and retraining staff. It also means augmenting the software with a host of other applications to fix the short-comings.”

This is another enormous problem. Why would any large-ish facility go to all the trouble and expense of switching over when there is a very real chance they’ll be left high and dry in another year or two i.e. Final Cut Server. People are still smarting over that.

Beg pardon, I think I misinterpreted your original comment.

Your clarification mirrors my feelings I think. I’m fairly indifferent as I struggle to imagine what they could really do that would knock socks off around the world.
Just knowing “something” is out there is profoundly unexciting. There always is!

The “confusion” is we have no idea what the CEO was talking about. He didn’t give any specifics, other than “something cool”. Erm, ok great thanks

    What’s the confusion indeed.

[Aindreas Gallagher] “the software does not exist. This software, in terms of being paid to edit, which is different to reading (and god how tired am I of that literacy argument), if you are looking to be paid to edit, there is absolutely no sign that you are going to be paid to have learned the completely non-standard practise dreamt up in FCPX.

that is an issue, and getting to 18 months after launch, with a lot bolted on, and absolutely no employer movement, this is an existential question for the softwar”

Not trying to get into a flame war, I’m just curious: Why is this? I’ve just checked broadcast now, mandy.com and grapevine ( 3 big recruitment/freelance sites here in the UK) and there is absolutely nothing for FCPX editors. There are some people listing it as a skill, but no job listings

As I say, there are plenty of people getting a lot out of this package. Why is no-one advertising jobs founded on it here in the UK?

November 7, 2012 at 6:28 pm in reply to: 10.0.6 a significant turning point.

Hello Keith, just thought id ask:

[Keith Koby] “We are putting events and projects on the san using san locations. The media itself is elsewhere, centrally located, on the san and the option to copy the media into the event on import is turned off.”

Does this imply the SAN locations aren’t actually shared on Xsan or equivalent level? They are local to the edit bays?

    Thanks in advance!
    James

Thats some really interesting stuff. The idea that Sohonet or other specialised ISPs could extend functionality would be pretty awesome. Another comment was that this could be a Unity/Xsan killer, which would be amazing for where I work.

    Thanks for posting!

Really interesting article, thanks for posting.

I noticed that it’s assumed you don’t want to see your other deactivated clips on the timeline. This isn’t an advantage for me at all…And when I do to tidy I simply nest. Just another example of me working around FCP7’s antiquated interface ? It just seems easier for the majority of work I do.
