Great news Jon. You are the 3rd person who has been able to use this process to get Encore running on an existing project again. I’m glad it helped.

jon … don’t shoot yourself!!! There’s got to be a fix .. somewhere.
I know this sounds nuts, but i’m including part of a chat session i had with Dell on a ‘General Error’ from Encore that (just as your problem) started out of the blue on an existing project for no apparent reason. I’ll tell you up front, it’s a painfull process but it may help. After disabling anti-virus and jumping through the standard hoops when you call tech-support, we got down to the below. And believe it or not, it worked. There was an applicaton that, when disabled, solved my problem. Good Luck!

to then test the behavior of Encore to see if the issue is still
present. If it is, I’d like you to go back to msconfig and choose
normal start up to revert all the settings back. Then you’ll want to
test with a different user account, just to see if the issue happens
there as well. If you find that the msconfig changes helped, then
you’ll want to head back to msconfig and systematically re-check to
enable the services and start up items to find out which one caused

Thanks for the help. That did work. I was trying to apply the ‘Transition’ … that won’t work. But since the Title is on a video track above my footage using the ‘Filter’ on the Title works great. -
If anyone is interested or has run into this problem, my solution was to uninstall Google Desktop application. The Google Desktop application was apparently one of those included applications that come with a new computer. I certainly didn’t go out and download/install it. Anyway, that fixed the problem, so if you have the problem or know someone that does, this may be the fix for you. If not, i have a process by which you can help you pinpoint what may be the problem on your specific system. Feel free to email me directly if you need. jdmoor@bellsouth.net

Did you every find a fix for this? I have exactly the same thingissue, but i’m running CS2. Just loded CS2 on a new Dell Workstation …. didn’t have the problem on my old Dell XPS.

Adam, did you ever find a fix for this? i’m using CS2, but i’ve got a similar situation. All is fine until i ‘Preview’; then for that point on, every time i try to re-preview, i get the “General Error” message. i did find one .mpg file (mp24x3NTSC720x480.mpg) in the Source/Video folder of my project seems to have problems. i suspect it may be the ‘preview’ video file that Encore builds on preview request, but anyway, when i try to play it, it won’t play and media player (ver.9) says it can’t find the file.
i’ve been searching various forums all day with no success.

do you have to views, each from a separate cam both shot at the same time? Did both cams have audio? you have to find a very noticeable event that both cams saw. with cam 1 on a video timeline, find that event, then set a clip marker (unnumbered is fine). un-enable that video line…now, find that same event (as close as you can) on the video line that has cam2…again, set a clip marker. OK, now move one or the other video lines to line up the two clip markers and re-enable the cam1 video line. Hopefully, if the event was something that was very short, like a still camera flash (which you can use in the future to intentionally cause an event to sync to) then you should be fine .. if it was something that wasn’t so precise, for example someone’s hand motion or walking past an identifiable point, a drum stick strike, whatever then you may have to tweak the sync by moving one video line or the other a few frames. You can also use the audio and try to line up wave forms if there’s a loud or sudden audio level change. At this point, it’s basically trial and error, but you should be very close based and all you are doing is tweaking.
