Hi Jeremy
what I’m suggesting is cutting in Proxy but not bothering to ‘Optimise Media” so when I finish my cut in Proxy I switch playback to “use original or optimised(no optimised it will surely choose original) and change render settings to Pro Res HQ (for example) and then I will be exporting direct from native files as opposed to the Compressed pro Res.
But I guess you may be suggesting if my original files are AVCHD it won’t make any difference?

Yes so the workflow would be “Create Proxy Media” and use appropriate (“Use Proxy Media”) playback settings in preferences and then before export change playback setting to “Use Original or Optimised Media” (we would be using original because we have not transcoded to Optimised…just proxy) and then in project properties change render format to Pro Res HQ or 444.
Then export.
If this workflow makes sense it does make the notion of “Create Optimised Media” when importing media completely redundant.
I think I must be missing something surely.

ahhhhh. That is very interesting and been puzzling me for a while.
So when you export it exports from the original files and not from the Pro Res timeline?
In which case why bother to ever transcode to Optimised instead of just cutting in Proxy all the time and then outputting.exporting from that?

Back in Legacy you only had to innocently change the clip name and if you did not “rename file to match clip” the game was up for relinking in my experience.
I am probably not using the software in nearly as advanced a way as a lot of you but for me just being able to rename clips in the browser without FCPX “caring” because all the other metadata maintains the link has been bloody marvellous.

This has started to puzzle me. I import as original/optimised media (latter is recommended by Apple) and have render set to whatever but I don’t want to compress hi rez to pro rez and then compress and “uncompress”.
I think being able to set sequence (sorry “project”) settings is imperative.
And changing the names was annoying at first.
What is the reason behind calling a Project an Event and a Sequence a Project? Different for differents sake?
Makes no sense to me…. and made getting my head round it all much harder.

I have never had anything so catastrophic…relinked many times…never realised it could go so pear shaped

I dunno I understand you think he might have been blobbing it up a bit for his own ends but if the budget is 60 million or even 20 million that’s pretty interesting too.
It obviously raised an alert on your bullshit radar which may be fair enough – perhaps he exaggerated a bit or was exaggerated a bit to. But “Making up stories” is tantamount to calling him a liar which is a bit strong dontcha think?

…and Aindreas aren’t you the guy who got all chippy and snotty with Craig Slattery when he was posting about his workflow with the Culture show for the BBC?
It was a pretty interesting development at the time. First broadcast show to use the software possibly.
Unless of course you re one of the people who has been shouting loudly from a mountain top that FCPX will never be fit for anything more than a video of Great Auntie’s 90’th birthday.
For my part I took the view that maybe those people at Apple aren’t so stupid and to watch and wait. For, as has been posted many times before, FCP versions 1 thru 3 were not fit for much and look what happened?
