[Aindreas Gallagher] “come on though, this is the oldest joke in editing. This forum is the last standing bar of FCPX.”

Well, the FCP10 editors Facebook page has 30,000 members, the Premiere editors Facebook page has 20,000 members, and the AVID editors FB page has 18,000 members. Just saying…

[Neil Goodman] “I bet your ass if all of the sudden – every shop switched to X – Editors would figure it out very quickly – or be poor.”

I was stuck on FCP7 for a couple of years after FCPX came out. But the minute a large Redmond, WA corporation brought me in to a group that used FCPX exclusively and paid me bucket loads of cash, you can bet I learned it in a week. That 2 year period, taught me the superiority of FCPX over Premiere, and I choose FCPX whenever I can preferentially. Simon should know that there are a lot of us out there.

[greg janza] “Advocating for consumer technology to be increasingly adapted into professional environments is really advocating for a complete disruption of the industry as a whole. These advancements are a boon for guerilla style production done on shoestring budgets but it doesn’t necessarily help the overall industry.”

I’m getting a deja-vu feeling. I don’t really want to use an iPhone professionally, but anytime I hear a bunch of professionals talking like this I know that the technology will be the next thing to be used in a professional way. May take a few years to get there, but this kind of thinking has repeated so often it is odd nobody realizes they are doing it. Today it is iPhones, but we could pick dozens of technologies that have been in a similar position in years past. …non-proprietary desktop editing / Premiere in 1993-4 was the first one I experienced, but also After Effects, scanned photos (edited with Photoshop), the original FCP, Hi-8, mini-DV, web video (compared to DVD-Video, then Blu-Ray), digital intermediates, digital cameras instead of film, people would never watch films on their laptops or smartphones… I know I am missing a lot of others.

Anyway, one thing smart phones are really good at is getting candid people interactions in crowded locations. I just helped a friend edit a promotional video that was shot on an iPhone of him interacting (in a wandering performance way) with country fair attendees. A couple of hours of this stuff, and not a single person looked at, or ever seemed to notice, the “camera person.” That’s pretty unusual in my experience. Sure, the video footage is kind of mediocre overall, but the content is compelling for what he needs. One small example of where a nicer camera would not be better. FWIW.

    [Bob Zelin] “Anything new sucked.”

And, “That will never catch on.” Over and over again. Denial seems to be the predominant human condition. Fascinating watching all of its permutations on Social Media. Seemingly never-ending.

[Bob Zelin] ” “back when I was a youngster””

I remember the first Micronet 2 GByte Raid 0 disk array I bought in 1993. Micronet did not even know it would not work for the continuous needs of video capture and playback (somewhere around a maximum of 3 MBps MJPEG capture as I recall; SVHS quality!). After some consultation with senior tech support staff they wrote an updated driver for me and shipped it overnight on a floppy in order to get the thing to work with my little Radius VideoVision Studio card (on a Mac Quadra 840av). I guess I must have been their first video beta tester. Fun times.

  • [David Seay] “…changing the render engine from Metal to OpenGL. You might also try using the Software Only mode as well, it’s slower, but doesn’t use your GPU.”

Yes, we tried both of those things, but not go. In the end, it took using a still to cover the side to fix the proxy renders for review. Final output was fine.

Adding an iZotope Ozone or RX plugin makes FCPX 10.4 quit.

  • [Tim Jones] “I switched from OpenGL to Metal and the flickering disappeared.”

Didn’t work for my friend. I’ll have him try software only to see if that helps. He has a MacBookPro, but not sure yet which graphic card.

I have the D700s in my Mac Pro and have no issues.

  • A friend has the same issue (with same camera footage) but only with proxies, and not with the source itself. He is seeing it both in playback of the proxies in Premiere and on export of the proxies. I’ve been trying to help him but cannot duplicate the issue on my machine with the same up to date versions of Premiere and AME. Was going to post here, but hope someone can suggest a solution to your issue.

July 14, 2017 at 6:50 am in reply to: Informal NLE poll

And up here in Seattle I worked for two years for a group at a large Redmond-based corporation with a huge budget that required I use FCP10 and it was an exceedingly profitable time for me. So, what I am trying to say is that how much you make isn’t dependent upon what NLE you know. But you should know the NLE that is required, and that may or may not vary from group to group, or region to region.
