Audio-only clips can be expanded just like video clips in either the primary or secondary storyline (expand audio/video; or expand audio components). You then overlap them as usual.

OK, I’ll take your word for it.
I’m still using FCP7 as well primarily because it is so comfortable and it is what most clients expect at this time. But as FCP7 becomes less usable and the only options are AVID and Premiere I’ll be using FCPX more and more when I have the choice. The more I use FCPX the harder it is to go back to legacy style editing apps.
Of course I’ll use whatever a client requests if they have a preference. But having to be fully proficient in all of the 4 main pro editing apps is going to be a PITA.

Admittedly, I was somewhat indifferent until I started using FCPX on real projects. It wasn’t until I put some serious time into it that I began to realize how good and fast an edit app it is (I certainly realize FCPX is not yet ready for many collaborative workflows).
I can understand having different preferences. But when someone says it is a terrible editor my guess is that they have not really used it. And it is interesting to remember that many AVID editors said the exact same thing about FCP legacy in the first years after its release.
I have preferred FCP legacy to AVID for a long time; but that does not make MC a terrible editor.

Interesting that I just got my first non-FCP7 request two days ago, which was… wait for it… FCPX. And a narrative short of all things from a commercial director who decided to take a class in editing at a local film program and really likes FCPX’s interface and ease of use. I guess she didn’t get the memo…
Actually, I am waiting to hear on another feature length documentary which also looks like it will be done in FCPX as well.

I’ve never encountered this kind of issue fortunately.
I personally wouldn’t do an external backup to another internal drive such that FCPX can see both when it is open. This seems to confuse FCPX. I do external backups to an external drive that is never mounted when I am working in FCPX. If I need to backup to an internal drive I use the FCPX duplicate command.

I learned to edit on a Sony switcher and Amiga toaster system. The hard part was learning to tell stories. Learning how to push buttons on an AVID later on was a minor learning chore in comparison.
Why would FCPX to AVID be any different?

FCP legacy is to FCPX as AVID MC was to FCP legacy when FCP legacy first came out.
Some people loved it and dove in, others hated it. Others hated it for a couple of versions and dove in later. Same as it ever was…

It doesn’t seem that way to me, though it clearly seems that way to you.
Anyway, I guess it is true we could take the forum title to be implicitly “This editing software or that: the debate.” Which is what it is gradually approaching.

Admittedly I’ve been too busy to follow a lot of these threads fully. But your point would appear to apply to most of the ongoing commentary on this particular forum.
Though I have found some of the threads comparing editing software illuminating… which is perhaps why I feel a more generic name would be more appropriate.
