In reference to the podcast though, it didn’t seem to me that these guys blasted the software. They just took a look at it and discussed the “deal breaking” missing features for them in their particular workflows as the software stands today.

Hey Bob,
I know you know what you are talking about obviously respect what you’ve said in this thread and I just have a couple of questions for you. You said to start with buying a “cheap Mac Pro.” I don’t want to spend time trying things that aren’t going to work or won’t give me plenty of room to grow. So, in following your advice, I am going to start there knowing I can add functionality/speed as I need to. Let me restate, my goal is not to get out as cheap as possible but to find the best solution for our needs. Considering that, here are my questions for now…
Would there be a benefit to getting a better Mac Pro than the one from the link you provided, or would that just be overkill?
Do I need to max out the Ram on the server? If not, how much should I plan for?
You mentioned, “With three 2 TB internal drives, you now have a 6TB array (RAID0) that can be SHARED STORAGE for your two “client” computers.” So, I will start there and possibly add a storage unit from Max Digital in the near future. Does that sound like a decent plan?Again, thank you for your input.

Hey Bob, thanks for the input. I guess I should clarify… I said, “sending me and my equipment scurrying to get out of the path of destruction.” What I should have said was…
We, 1st properly shut down all of the equipment. 2nd, unplugged everything to protect it from harm. Then, quickly and carefully removed it from the path of impending harm in the form of water spraying from the wall. In other words, we stayed with the ship.I would venture to say that there are probably quite a few differences between the two of us Bob. However, our level of commitment to our respective employer’s data and operations is not one.

Hello all,
Two weeks ago a pipe burst in my office building sending me and my equipment scurrying to get out of the path of destruction. I am still a refugee at this point but when everything is back as it should be, I will be working on setting up this network. I’ll keep you posted. -
Bob,
I’m not sure how asking the question, “Does it have to be a Mac pro or would this PPC work?” can be construed as “giving [you] a hard time.” But if that’s how it came across, I am sorry. I was trying to clarify a solution you proposed(thank you steve for your answer). Also, you are correct on all accounts less one. I have not been given ZERO budget. Frankly, I can afford paint for my house. I am just trying to decide on a color. I have been entrusted to come up with a legitimate solution for a problem. I am in the information gathering stage of finding that solution.
I will try plugging the two computers directly together via Ethernet first and buy another mac pro to use as a dedicated server if that proves to be inadequate and I will be happy to report back.
Thank you all for your responses. -
Not sure where you go that my goal was to find the cheapest solution possible. Quite the contrary, I am ready to spend some money, I would just prefer to spend it wisely. I have a G5 I could use as a server if that’s where I should start. Does it have to be a Mac pro or would this PPC work? I Am currently using intel based Mac pros as editors.

Ok, I think we will probably stick to 2 stations for the next year or so. I am thinking about archives and storage now. I already have some archives in the form of “hard drives on a shelf.” So, in looking at making the jump to a more secure form of storage and archives, I have seen so many options, SAS being one of them.
If I can get by for now on ethernet sharing, what would you guys recommend for storage? And what level of RAID is the best for this situation? How do you guys set up your storage?
-
Thank you for such a thorough response. We have been file sharing but the stations are connected through our office server. Just wondering, you said,
“- Connect both workstations to each other with GigE, this can be direct or through a switch. As long as they can ping each others IP addresses you’re good.”
Does that mean, if I use a switch, I could add additional stations and keep the same speed or will it slow down? Also,
“you can use jumbo frames and add a GigE HBA”
does that mean, a special card in the stations? Or is that just a setting somwhere? Thanks again.

Still looking for a storage solution that will be safe and fast. Also, I would like to look into something that I could eventually add another station to.
