hi there,
cheers for that.
that’s fine but i know how to convert that isn’t my problem –
i really want to know how to export (in 16:9 SD) one of the files types that i’ve listed. I just need some instruction, and i can’t find anything specific to that on this site.
if you know please help!

Nice one – that makes sense. I always thought bullet time was just super slow motion and then the whole 3d rotating thing came in – this just seems to be a still image so didn’t make the connection. I’ll look it up – cheers!

guys, this has been unbelievably helpful.
I thank you all so much. I’m going to try the suggestions now, and your right – i’ll give them a call when i’ve done it just to check.
The quicktime is definitely a good idea.
Thanks loads. I’ll post again if any problems but i think i should be okay from here.

I had the idea of using effects just the ones in this link below to make it look intentional. Its all the usual film scratching stuff, but it’s done quite effectively in this video and it doesn’t look too gratuitous or cheap, and yet there’s lots of it. Obviously, it will look even better because of the fact it was shot on film.
Anyhow, have a look:

does anyone know where and how i can get my hands on these effects? is it a plug in? The film plug in on fcp is nowhere near as good as this, unless i’m just doing something wrong.
Cheers guys, jack 🙂

your both right, and i’m just a film maker who has never been able to find an editor he trusts, so I find i have to do (and actually prefer) the editing myself. But getting to grips with the little things that aren’t obvious, but actually are probably cleverly thought out and save time for those who do this professionally, takes a little more time than i have when i’m doing everything else too! But again, your right, i’ll get there.
I love apple really, of course I do, but it seems they really have botched up with the smoothcam plug in, i’ve spoken with technical support about it and it really is something the engineers know about but haven’t sorted. I’m not saying they should fix it right now, i appreciate they’re busy with other things, but if they’re aware of it there really should be warnings. You can appreciate how much things slow down towards the end of an edit (on an imac with HD anyhow), so I could have worked around this at the beginning if apple had merely said that smoothcam doesn’t export in fcp 7.
I’ve calmed down anyhow. and thanks for not being too harsh on me. I did figure it out seconds after i posted, i was a little blinded by my frustration, i just wanted to get a post out early just incase i didn’t sort it!
Cheers guys. Jack 🙂

please ignore.
its because the clips are too short, i need to transfer the master clip to motion and back again. i am so frustrated with apple and the project that i am losing my mind.

December 29, 2009 at 7:27 pm in reply to: smoothcam export solution nowhere to be found! help!!hi gabrielle –
thanks alot for the info. I’m still a little confused however. Are you using FCP 7? Have you experienced this particular problem??? I have absolutely no problems with converting any material -all my 5d footage runs fine as prores LT, but my specific problem is merely with the exporting of those very few clips that have the smoothcam plug in applied to them.
I’m not an experienced editor so a lot of your information is hard for me to digest. I only need to know which format I could convert these few shaky clips to in order to be able to use smoothcam and export without the shake returning! Or even whether or not this is actually possible!

December 25, 2009 at 6:49 pm in reply to: smoothcam export solution nowhere to be found! help!!hi guys, thanks so much for your help here, especially this weekend your right david, i hadn’t expected any help, but that doesn’t make it any easier for me to forget that only yesterday i thought i was done with this god forsaken project – now its eating into my xmas. If i was spending today with my GF i think she’d have murdered me by now, i can see myself having no life in the future.
gabriele – thank you so much but which format works? this is 5d footage (1920 x 1080) so it needs to be pro res does it not? is it just pro res the smooth cam doesn’t like to export?
david – i am working with pro res LT, and trying to output into high quality for the internet. I’ve been advised that h.264 is best for doing this, but i am by no means an expert.
i’ve tried doing both from the timeline and as a stand alone movie. neither work. i really hope i don’t need to know about the things you mentioned in order to sort this, i heard this is just a bug and apple are responsible – the smoothcam is simple drag and drop, this must be an export issue as i have no trouble editing in the timeline or playing back. i’ve never known anything like it.
Thanks guys, and gabriele – if you could let me know of which format might work then i would be forever grateful. It may be that this won’t have to eat up my boxing day too! Just to re-iterate, i have no problem APPLYING the smooth cam, it is only when exported i experience the problem.
cheers guys, Jack

hi shane
thanks for the reply. thought of this only thing is that i’d need a really old vhs player, they don’t seem to make them with tracking knobs anymore. I think i’ll have a go at sourcing an older one.
Also, i was hoping to do it without getting all the degeneration along with it, so if anyone knows of a simple (or not so simple) way of doing this in FCP then please let me know!
Thanks shane!

Wow, thanks a lot everyone.
Comforting to know that if something does botch up I can use 3d software, and thanks very much for the tips and links. I’ll look into this.
Doubly comforting post from david so thanks, this is indeed what i’m going to try before the shoot. Glad to hear it’s something you think is easily achievable. Anyhow, thanks again, can get on with this full of confidence!
Cheers guys 🙂
