    Hi,

Thanks for all the great replies. Sounds like FCP is more stable than PPro (PPro is crashing about 8 times a day at the moment on my system… sometimes it crashes every 15 minutes or so when I’m doing audio mixing on big projects. Not fun.)

A few of my friends cut on FCP so I’m going to spend a few days testing out FCP before I take the plunge. There are a few “Apple” ways of thinking that will take some time to get used to (like not being able to put the system into a larger enclosure or upgrade the motherboard at all… and having to spend 3x what the hardware would cost if I assembled it myself).

But, at the end of the day, I absolutely NEED a stable editing environment and PPro isn’t providing that so I’m going to have to test out the alternatives.

Many thanks for all the responses – do keep them coming,
    Thanks,
    Jack

    Hi Walter,

Thanks so much for the detailed and thoughtful reply – that’s a great help. I certainly will check out your blog and your website.

Also, just to be clear: I’m as sure as I can be that the stability issues I’m having on PPro are attributable to PPro, not to my system being unhealthy. I’ve spent a lot of time, money and effort on making my PC as stable and as beefy as possible.

    Many thanks,
    Jack

    Hi Tyler & Kevin,

Man, thanks so, sooo much for all your work. If you’re ever in London then drop me a line and I’ll definitely take you both out for a beer!

Great work! I think I’m going to have to spend a day with the AE manual just to get my head around what you’ve done (I’ve only dabbled in Expressions before).

    Thanks again,
    Jack

    Thanks for the heads-up.

I’ve been thinking some more about this “pin mould” project and I’m starting to think that maybe I should do it all in Blender 3D. It should be quite easy to make 3D, silver pins and I’m pretty sure I can use physics simulation to model the way the bottom of the pins will interact with the text. And, of course, Blender will look after all the shadows for me.

    Hmmm… decisions, decisions!

Kevin, if you had to do a pin-mould project, would you do it in AE or a 3D package? (Of course, my preferred option would be to go out and buy a real pin mould and shoot it in a studio with the camera on a jib arm… but I don’t think we can afford that!)

    Thanks,
    Jack

Kevin, thank you so much for your extremely detailed reply! I think that must rate as one of the most helpful replies I’ve ever received on a forum!

The “pin mould” project has been put on hold for a week or so but I’ll be sure to give your suggestion a go when the project gets done. You’re far more advanced at expressions than I am but this could be a good excuse for me to learn a little more about expressions.

    Thanks again,
    Jack

    Cool, thanks a lot!

  • Hi,

I’ve just been tinkering with Alparysoft’s de-interlace plug-in for PPro. Some notes:

    1) It does seem to do a good job at de-interlacing PAL 50i standard definition DV. It’s single-threaded though (so it doesn’t make use of multiple processor cores).

    2) I can’t get it to work with HD content. I’ve tried HDV .mpeg files and Cineform files. This is a deal-breaker for me. I need it to work with HD.

    Thanks,
    Jack

  • Oooh, thanks for the heads-up on that Alparysoft plug-in. That looks interesting – I might give it a shot later this afternoon.

The blurb seems to suggest that it does some clever motion compensation.

Regarding whether or not it’s safe to download Russian software – I understand that a lot of spam and viruses come from Russian computer users but I’d suggest that it’s a little far-fetched to suggest that you shouldn’t touch any code written by Russians! Besides, you shouldn’t need to worry too much about viruses and malware if you’re properly protected.

    Thanks,
    Jack
