  • PPro CS3 deinterlacing – does it still drop vertical res by 50%?

Posted by Jack Kelly on July 13, 2007 at 11:58 am

    Hi there,

As we all know, CS3 includes a cool new time-remapping feature. The presence of this new feature might suggest that PPro CS3’s handling of interlaced video has been improved. So my question is: does CS3 now include an “intelligent” de-interlacing system which uses motion compensation to interpolate the missing vertical resolution (like many of the de-interlace filters used in aviSynth)? Or does de-interlacing in PPro CS3 still halve your vertical resolution?

    Many thanks,
    Jack

    Hi Jack,

Deinterlacing on speed changes (slo mo, time remap) is now the same as AE…which is far better than what PPro had before…which was not very good.

    Hi Tim:
Do you know how the deinterlacing now compares to something like the deinterlacer that comes with Resizer?

    Hi Blast1,

If I may be so bold, I’d like to jump in here.

In terms of comparing PPro’s de-interlacing with other systems, I’ve just spent the day comparing PPro 2.0’s de-interlacing with aviSynth’s de-interlacing:

Thanks for the info, interesting about the p project, I’m more concerned in de-interlacing DV WS prior to upscaling for use in HDV projects.

One would need to compare CS3 and Resizer I suppose, PPro CS2 is simply not as good.

I use Instant HD occasionally…but I’ve done no specific testing on it.

You might look at DVFilm Maker which can

    1) deinterlace intelligently and also
    2) smooth the 4:1:1 chroma to 4:4:4
    3) enlarge to 1440 x 1080 anamorphic

in one step. It can also batch process clips.

Here is a comparison test between conventional
editing system deinterlacing and DVFilm Maker

[Tim Kolb] “compare CS3 and Resizer”
Thats what I was wondering if someone had done, I’ve seen a comparison between Instand HD and Resizer1 with footage deinterlaced in AFX, they were fairly close, since Resizer 2 is shipping with its own deinterlacer I was curious if the one in CS3 was as good.

    Hi Marcus
Thanx for the info, but I didn’t see anything about 30p or 60p just 24p, I was more interested in video vice film

Maker does 60i to 30P as well as 24P.

Has anybody had any experience with the Alparysoft deinterlace filter plug-in for premiere?
