You do not need to create a sequence to transcode a source file; export it from the source monitor.

Preview files are used to review a sequence while editing, but are not necessarily related to export files. Please refer to the Adobe support page, Encode and export video and audio for more information.

Both computers will need to load the DNxHD codec pack. After installing just restart the computer and you will be all set.

– Insert the background video on Track 1

– If you want a semi-transparent layer of the high-contrast clip, insert it on Track 2 and set Opacity as desired (35% in the sample shown below)

– Insert the high-contrast clip above the other clip(s) and add the Luma Key effect; adjust Threshold and Cutoff accordingly

Luma, Color, or Chroma Keying could work to mask off the desired areas.

I think you are right. After running the tests two more times it appears the codec is designed to render I-frames in greater detail when N=1. The following image shows sections of two consecutive frames magnified 400%. Accuracy decreases and blocking increases, even in the I-frames, when N>1.

That was it. Somehow the multiplexer stream compatibility was set to iPod. I must have inadvertently hit a preset at some point. Thanks!

Perhaps my comment should be qualified to read, “So it appears Premiere Pro does not use B-frames for H.264 exports when bitrate is not a constraint.” I am encoding with target bitrate maximized, and the generated files don’t have B-frames. Maybe the encoder just uses P-frames when there is ample bitrate available.

Yeah, Expression Encoder uses MainConcept, too. It sets keyframe distance down to 0.1 seconds, so All-Intra files can’t be created above 15fps.

I generated the chart based on tests that have been running over night. Another batch of files is currently processing at different H.264 profiles and levels, but results so far are consistent with the chart.

Thanks for the reply, Angelo. It appears the AME H.264 encoder requires significantly more bitrate for All-Intra. QuickTime only uses about 20 Mbps to encode the test file compared to 50 Mbps for AME H.264. Data rates at other key frame distances seem to align reasonably well.
