    Hey!

How do I know if the footage is interlaced?

I assumed these are dslr-artifacts (like aliasing, moire etc)

    Hey!

Thanks a lot for your suggestion!

I tried this on a couple of clips and nothing happened.
Since the problem is there even before importing them to premiere, the problem might be something else?

    Thanks!

Yup, the weight is a big issue with the c100, so hard to say if it’s worth the weight,,

I’ve never had to care about the sound since I make film for music but who know for the future, good to know.

Which general picture style of A7s and C100 do you think would go best together with my 7D footage that I will have to use in the same project? Or will this be mission impossible?

    Thanks again!

Thanks a lot for your input Mark.

Right now it feels like it’s either sony A7 / a7s or canon c100. Just wish I could try them both out in the conditions I usually shoot in.

    I see, thanks.
Since I’m filming a looot of material and on longer hikes etc it will be very complicated to shoot RAW since it will produce gigantic files that I will have a hard time storing.

I’m leaning a bit against trying out the Sony A7 to see how it compares to my D7. One advantage to others is that it’s so small which is extremely handy when bringing it on hikes. Another is the price. A third is that it’s supposed to be good in low light.

Can you see any big downsides to this compared to D5 Mark III or D7 Mark II?

Very grateful for all the input!

Thank you so much for your input!

Ah that’s too bad to hear, I was hoping to get away with the 7D Mark II. I talked to guy where I bought my 7D and he said they are worlds apart, that it would be so much better with noise levels etc..

Regarding the GH4, do you believe that the material would be too different to use together with the material filmed with my 7D?
Will try to look for comparison shots from 7D / GH4 to know the difference in style.

I would love to use the c100 for the rest of the project, it’s just still too expensive in Sweden. I already went beyond budget and I’m not sure if I can use it for more projects.
Also it might be a little heavy since I have to bring the camera on longer hiking trips and the filming gear is already a bit too heavy.

What does running magic lantern add? Sorry if stupid question!

    Thanks!

    Hey Steve!

Great to get advice from you, I’ve seen your posts on other threads and you really seem to know what you’re talking about.

Thanks a lot for trying to set yourself in my situation! What you say makes a lot of sense, I think it will be a mess in post if I start to experiment with new settings this far into the project. Just wanted to make sure that I’m not compromising anything too much by shooting flat since I started to read more and more negative comments about it.

Just to be able make a quick test what the pictures will become, as a total new beginner in post production, what would you do with sharpness, contrast and color etc in premiere? I mean just some rough, general adjustments. I don’t think I’m gonna do post editing myself but I’d like to get what the pictures can become.

Would love to have your advice on other things as well if you have time.

    Thank you, thank you!

    Thanks for your input.

Big file sizes is very bad for me since I shoot ridiculous amounts.

To be honest I just want settings that don’t give the pictures I shoot too much of a style, settings that are anonymous / “normal” and don’t limit the possibilities for post.

    Anyone who has advice?

    Thanks for your input!

    – So you think the anti-aliasing filter affects the material more than the aliasing / moire?

    – I don’t have the knowledge to determine what settings I should use. Normally I don’t necessarily know what I’m shooting will be for, I was shooting flat to be able to decide that at a later stage and be able to get as much out of the material afterwards, possibly together with a grader. But now I have shot at least 50 % of my current project with flat settings so I don’t know if it’s possible / is any point in switching settings if I want to be able to use everything together?

    – I always shoot at ISO 160 or 320.

    – My lens is way more expensive than the ones you suggest and I was told this is a really really good lens? As I wrote I use a Canon EFS 17-55 f 2.8 lens. What are the advantages with the lenses you suggest?

    – What camera would you suggest if I decide to buy a new one?

Would be amazing if someone has thoughts for my questions in my previous post as well!

    Thanks a lot!

    Hey Bill!

Thank you so much, this was very helpful and cleared at least some of my questions. It’s very comforting to know why some of the problems occur instead of just having an abstract feel of bad quality pictures.

To solve the problems is a whole other thing though. Maaan I wish I had researched all this properly a lot earlier. My friends friend told me I was good to just shoot and I wanted to be believe it and did..

I guess the noise is a low light problem in many of my pictures since they are shot at dawn and dusk but the example clip was shot in the middle of the day and still has some noise. Is the light still too low?
What ways are there to get around this and minimize the noise?
Since I shoot at dawn and dusk the light changes a lot and I don’t have time to do perfect settings, especially since I have to be in the pictures myself in this project.

Good to know about moire, that explains it why the patterns in the blowing sand in Sahara fucked up those shots :*( That one seems easier to avoid than the aliasing though.

Do you know any downsides of the anti-aliasing filter?

If I were to switch cameras, would I be able to shoot material that looks the same as with my 7D but without the problems of course? The thing is that I need to be bale

Another question I have is whether or not 720 has worse picture quality than 1080. I thought it was just that 1080 was in a bigger scale but maybe I have misunderstood these concepts totally. From some videos I’ve been watching to solve this problem it seems like I have. If so, I wish so much I had bought a camera that could shoot in 1080 and 50 or 60 fps from the beginning cause there is no point in doing that now? Or will 1080 material shot in 50 fps scaled down to be able to use with the 720 material look better than the 720 material? And still not too good / different to use with the 720 material? Haha, sorry about that maze.

Is it an option to shoot in 1080 and 25 fps and do the slow-motion in post? It’s not a super high tech video with a lot of focused movement. It’s mostly landscapes and sometimes me moving a little.

Thank you so much and sorry for all the questions / confusion.

    Bless

    Ingemar
