We all know that it’s the talent, not the tools that make a nice body of work, but that wasn’t the subject. That’s an old concept and no one here disagrees with it, but with all due respect for that philosophy, I’ll go get a new Ferrari if it’s the price of my used STI, even if the STI gets me around just fine. Resolve doesn’t mean I’m getting rid of Color, and that’s why I’m interested in Magma and Cubix. I’ve figured out a way to fit my Ferrari and Subaru in a one car garage.

Your reservations and “Jedi Knights vs.The Darkside” opinions seem legitimate to you, but it doesn’t make sense to spew negative opinions about DaVinci/BMD’s “marketing” because Resolve’s price isn’t based around your particular market or self proclaimed hobby. Many freelance colorists in the Americas and Europe, from your own words, get paid more and pay less for their gear so according to our rates, BMD has done us a favor by cheaply expanding the average colorist’s personal toolset with an app that used to be reserved for high end studios.

Before Resolve, in this price range we had…

    Color – $999

    Color Finesse HD – $1995

    Magic Bullet Suite – $799

    Speedgrade Onset – $749

    3cP – $1499

Since you have a resume a football field long, it seems even more ridiculous that you’re complaining about buying a $995 video card and $800 on GPUs. Just that right there will get you way farther than any Color system you own.

Have you seen what Resolve can do compared to Color or are you just speaking from your experience with an ancient 2K? I took a 10 session course covering Resolve that was recorded in late 2008, and that old system was still light years ahead of what Color can do now and BMD explicitly stated that they’re releasing a fully functioning version. If you can’t playback 10 nodes applied to a RED clip in real time, then you can just render it quickly and play it back in real time.

And in case you didn’t notice, Black Magic is one of the companies that is slowly making that “kick ass color correction suite” for every “joe film maker” a reality.

How much would this cost from a company like AJA?

If you have problems with gaps, use control + G then shift + G until you’re done with the sequence. Even if it was an hour of programming it wouldn’t take very long.

Create a new sequence with the correct settings then copy and past your old timeline into the new sequence. For future reference, change your auto conform settings in the user preferences so this doesn’t happen again.

Rick Turners “And, one thing thats popular now is to have the editor do the online and grade for lower budget projects, and in smaller markets,”

That’s funny. A good portion of my male editing friends have some form of color blindness.

According to your IMDB page, it says you’ve been a colorist since 1988. I find it hard to believe that someone who’s been grading that long is actually complaining about spending a few thousand dollars when this kind of kit would have cost hundreds of thousands just a little while ago. If you already have a real color grading suite, then you’re halfway there.

Resolve does have internal scopes and a viewer which you can use if you have no other option. That means you only have to spend a little money on compatible GPUs.

Hopefully CC will have something from the Black Magic guys by the time it comes out, but yeah, it was the online one. It’s basically set up so you’re “sitting” in on the grading session while the instructors drive the panel. The screen splits so you can watch the monitor feed, their hands on the panel, and the GUI while they’re working. The panel seems fairly straight forward after watching the CU’s of their hands for a few lessons.

    “fast render farms”?

You need to do a little bit more research. One of the main points of Resolve is that you don’t need to render. Look up power mastering if you want a better idea of what it’s capable of without rendering and definitely look up how Serial, Parallel, and Layer Mix nodes work. All the color processing is done using the CUDA cards.

I just finished a Resolve course that used a system that I think was over 2 years old with the old panel. That old system blows Color away and now with potential new features and the Impressario or Wave, I imagine you could be finishing your work in a quarter of the time it takes with Color, even on OSX.

On a side note, I don’t see the point in complaining about spending a few thousand dollars on your career. If you’re serious about it and you can’t afford it, get a loan or a credit card. That’s how small business owners get started.
