Hi Anne,
You can add titles, comments and shot flags in the ‘General’ area beneath the preview window. Click the Update button to save your changes.
If you start adding title metadata you may want to change the CLIP NAME preference in Tools–>Options–>Display to ‘Clip Titles’ instead of ‘File Names.’

Unfortunately Craig is correct in that the releases could be better coordinated between the Sony sales companies around the world. It’s something we’re working to improve. Also worth mentioning, however, is that in the states we run all the XD software and documentation through a last round of internal QA before posting (as opposed to just taking a zip file that’s been handed to us and posting it).
As soon as we get the production version of the software online I’ll post a link.

Hi Jay,
Yes, XDCAM Browser, which should be released this week, will replace XDCAM Transfer, Clip Browser and PDZ-1 (optical XDCAM software). See here for more info:

Hi Heather,
If this continues after performing a Reset you should have the camera and/or media looked at by Sony. If you are formatting the cards before use the camera should be reading/reporting accurately. It’s unlikely that it’s a firmware issue as the EX3s have always supported 32 GB SxS-Pro.
Call the service group at 866 766 9272 and tell them you have an EX that needs attention and they will take care of you.

Ian

Hi Chuska,
Clip Browser does not support files over 4 GB. Unfortunately it is a known limitation of the software. However, XDCAM Transfer 2.12 supports loose .mp4s so the file should be importable into FCP. Try adding the folder with your .mp4s as a source in Transfer.

Yes, copy the BPAV (root folder) to another folder and give the parent folder a unique name. Do not modify anything below BPAV. If you follow this rule and your copies go as planned you should have no issues.
Also know that the Avid AMA module (or any other NLE, for that matter) can sometimes have issues with media files for reasons that might have nothing to do with the integrity of the files themselves. This is another reason to use a dedicated app like CB or ShotPut to QC your files.
One last thing…XDCAM optical is .mxf with MPEG-2 video. XDCAM EX uses an .mp4 wrapper. Workflow via AMA is the same but the .mp4s cannot be File–>Imported the way .mxfs can.
Cheers and good luck,
Ian

Hi Lawrence,
It is reasonably safe to simply copy the BPAVs from the cards to folders on an external drive but we strongly recommend using Clip Browser to CRC check the files. It will add a bit of time to the offload but it’s the safest way to go.
Clip Browser is for copying and managing the cards. XDCAM Transfer is the import plug-in. There is a bit of overlap in terms of their logging functions but they should be thought of as separate tools.

The spanning is normal if it’s a long file. The EX cards use the Fat32 file system which has a 4 GB file size limit. Long records are broken into component .mp4s which are linked together by a .smi file.
Make sure that in Clip Browser you are trying to manually import the .mp4s, not the .smi (which resides in the TAKR folder).
One trick which you can try if you edit in Final Cut Pro…. Sony has a plug-in which allows for, among other things, direct editing (i.e. no conversion/re-wrap) of .mp4 files. Download the free trial of the plugin and see if it allows you to drag the mp4s into Final Cut. There are no limitations on the trial version except for the time frame (2 weeks). If it works, transcode the files to ProRes or another format before the trial runs out.
If you hit an absolute brick wall and the files are still on the SxS card contact Sony Media; they may be able to recover them for you. 334 793 7655.
