The MicMate is a great device. MXL have also introduces a low cost USB Mic with zero latency monitoring via the built in headphone jack. It’s under a hundred dollars.

MXL Make a mic called the Studio 1. It is USB, plus has a headphone socket for zero latency monitoring. This works great for getting narrations etc into FCP. Plus it’s under a hundred bucks.
