  • How to record audio directly into FCP 6?

Posted by Beau Brotherton on April 28, 2008 at 8:38 pm

    Hello to all,

This might be a dumb question, but is there a way to record audio directly into FCP 6?

I have an AJA LHe and Mackie 1202-VLz3

We have a project that has 20 something individual spots that need VO scratch tracks so that the client can have an example of what the spot will be with the script.

I have been using my HVX200 to record to P2, then log and transfer, then remove video and copy and paste the audio where needed.

I know someone out there is laughing, but I don’t know how else to do this. I’ve never used pro tools, sure that would be the first clue. But do you have to have specific application or can Soundtrack do this?

All I need to do is go from a phantom power mic to, something of this computer.

Thanks for your help and have a good one.

    Best,

Run your mic to the Mackie

    Turn on the Phantom Power

    Launch FCP

    Launch the Voice Over Tool

    Capture.

If you’re not exactly sure how the VO tool works, just launch Help and type Voice Over Tool.

Alternatively, you can launch Quicktime Pro and record your audio tracks there and then bring those into FCP. This is actually what I do. You just ensure that the AJA Kona is your Audio Input device in System Preferences.

Soundtrack Pro works pretty decently for this as well.

[Cedric Nairn- Smith] “I have a hand held mic plugged into my companion 5 speakers. I am still unable to record sound.”

You have to plug your mic in to a mixer, your mixer then needs to go to a capture card of some sort, then open up FCP/STP and record sound.

Your speakers are not an input device, they are an output device.

    Make sense?

    That will work.

The Blu Snowball work very well for this too if you need something a little more high end.

MXL Make a mic called the Studio 1. It is USB, plus has a headphone socket for zero latency monitoring. This works great for getting narrations etc into FCP. Plus it’s under a hundred bucks.
