Thanks very much for this info Rob!

Are there 4 mic input channels on all those receivers ?
Camera mount and table models ?

I don’t understand the differences between the “A” and “B”, etc models.

    Could anyone illuminate that ?

These similar Evolution G2 100 models would all result in respectable audio quality ?

    Hi Ty,

Thanks very much for your response.

We are new to doing sound for video.
We’re using a Panasonic AG-DVX100A camera, but the built in mics result in too much room noise, and reverberation in the voices recorded.

We’re doing a documentary, and would like to capture the sound at a respectable quality, for as low a price as possible to achieve it.

I’m thinking wireless Lavalier is the best way to go, because a lot of it will be a talking head in front of a green screen-
But part of it will be walking around and talking on locations.

And we don’t have a crew to facilitate a lot of setup and operation.

Could you recommend something that would be a good choice for these needs ?

    Thanks for your help !

    Thanks for posting this !

How would it apply if you’re using Quicktime ?

Does anyone know if this Speed Test is accurate ?

Or have a better one ?

    Thanks.

    Hi Dean,

Is “Export for Web” better than Compressor 2 ?

As it turns out, it looks like Progressive Download will work for us.

What is a good practical bit rate, so it will play well on most computers ?

I think we’ve decided to go with Quicktime movies, and let the PC people pull it in to view, if they don’t have it already.

It’s not a difficult process, and this is a specialized sort of situation- noncommercial.

    One question about Compressor:
Does anyone know when it’s useful to use
Rate Conversion: Best High Quality Motion Compensated ?

I’ve never had it be useful, but I try it now and then just to check.
But it takes a very long time . . .

Any quality enhancement tips for the Compression procedure greatly appreciated !

    Thanks very much !
Very interested in all the thoughts on this matter !

Thanks for your response Arnie !

It’s always kind of a balancing act between having enough details, and too many details, sometimes in these postings . . .

It’s Streaming Video that we’re looking for.

I’m told that is the most universally accessible format for video streaming from the internet.
So, I’ve tried a few Quicktime to flv converters,
trying to get my Quicktime files into a flv looking good,

But the results were not nearly as good visually, which is important on this project.

Is there are practical way to make a QT files universally accessible via Streaming Video ?

For instance, I’ve got a 8.2 gb mov file,
             compressed down to 26 mb
And I’d be happy if I could put that up . . .
and streaming down looking the same.

Visual Hub turns those files into a 37 or 47 mb flv file,
            that doesn’t look nearly as good . . .
At any of the basic settings.
And the interface warns one away from the advanced settings.

I installed On2 Flix Exporter, but it does appear in the menu bar or anywhere in Compressor 2, so I haven’t been able to try that one.

With Perian installed, along with On2 Flix Exporter, Quicktime can convert to flv using that plugin, but it is very slow, and looks pretty bad.

MEPG Streamclip doesn’t convert to flv, unless you have special Adobe software installed, which I don’t.

How to get those QT files happily up for quality viewing ?
All thoughts and advice very welcome !

Thanks much for your time and your help !

Any suggestions as to where to go for high quality video web hosting ?

We’ve got 90 minutes worth of videos that we need to put up, the longest is 35 mins. They need to appear to the web viewer in as high quality as possible.

    Thanks.

  • Hi Mark,

Thanks very much for your response !
I will keep this helpful information for future reference !

However, what I need to do in this situation is change the Frame Rate of the underlying clips, that are already edited into a sequence.

    The problem is:
The Sequence is 29.97, but all the video clips are 23.98.

I’d like to convert those 23.98 clips to 29.97,
and then reconnect to the new frame rate versions of those clips to the Sequence.

Do you know if that’s possible ?

There are a lot of Key Frame edits on those clips.
Will that remain properly in place ?

Do you know how best to convert those individual clips using Compressor 2 ?

What would be the best settings to just change the Frame Rate, and nothing else, keeping the same quality ?

Thanks very much for your help !

  • Hi Rafael,

Thanks very much for your response !

In the Sequence Settings window in Final Cut:

    The Frame Size is 720 x 480
Aspect Ratio is NTSC DV (3:2)
    Pixel Aspect Ratio: NTSC-CCIR 601/DV (…
    Anamorphic 16:9 is NOT checked

    Editing Timebase: 23.98

    Quicktime Video Settings
    Compressor: DV/DVCPRO- NTSC
    Quality: 100%

    Are these settings incorrect ?

It is curious, because the image in the Canvas is actually 640 x 480.
    And it looks fine there.

And when I Export, I have to Custom change the size to be 640 x 480,
Otherwise, the result is a 720 x 480 Quicktime movie, which is warped out too wide . . .

Also, in the Final Cut Browser window,
all the video clips are listed as Frame Size 720 x 480.
All of the video clips are listed with a Pixel Aspect NTSC-CCIR 601
    And all have Alpha: None/Ignore

It seems maybe I’ve got some settings wrong ?
    Thanks for your help !

June 2, 2009 at 10:54 am in reply to: Looking for a good sounding Lavalier Mic

Thanks very much to all for your helpful advice, recommendations and comments !

It is very fortunate for us to receive this from such an experienced and knowledgeable group !

For this coming project, we’d like to record directly from the Panasonic AG-DVX100A
    Into the computer, in realtime,
-and use a MOTU Traveler for the audio interface/mixer to the computer.
(I assume that’s better quality than the camera audio inputs ?)

We’d like to do this to save the time it would take loading at least one of the cameras data into the computer.

Is anyone familiar with the best way to do that ?

We’ll be using Final Cut 5.1.4 on this part of this project-
booted in OS 10.4.11 from an external 7200 rpm mirrored RAID, via Firewire 800.
On a MacBook Pro Santa Rosa model.

We’re in the formative stages of a project that may expand to significantly greater technical means as it develops, but for now- we’re starting off with the basics.
    All the same-
we want these results to be the highest quality possible,
regardless of how the project develops.

Thanks again for your help !
    Howard Ferguson

    ps:
Also, I took a minute to pop some stuff in the profile.
Various clients have various systems for the video aspects of their projects, so I didn’t put that in the profile.

    Hi,

    Thanks for all the responses.
It’s interesting to learn from the comments.
It was never my intent to create any controversy.

I was talking with a friend.
    He’s a smart guy.
You’re a bunch of smart folks.
So it seemed reasonable to ask the question.

I very much appreciate all the help I have received from this forum,
both direction from response to postings, and via searching through previous threads.

Some folks, in particular, have been wonderfully directly helpful with very detailed specific information.
A very very special thanks for that !!!
