[Simon Ubsdell] “When I’m in After Effects, I wish it could be more like Motion, and when I’m in Motion I wish it could be more like After Effects; I wish Fusion could be more like Nuke and I wish Nuke could be more like Fusion; there are things I love about Media Composer, and things that make me want to punch a hole through my screen.”

Since I’m a monogamous ap user I don’t have this conflict nearly as much as the realization that there is a feature in a now dead bit of software that I wish I could resurrect into the here and now.

I get the feeling that most NLE software designers have a rather rudimentary knowledge of the history of their field and are not aware of some of the rather sublime features that many “dead” NLEs had that are worthy of consideration and emulation. it is very odd to be working on something in 2015 and wishing for a feature you used to have in 1998.

  • [Phil Bucci] “I know you can do this in Pp but I’m looking for a batch solution if its out there.”

Yes you can do this in Ppro, without using PluralEyes at all, and I can’t figure out why you don’t and why you think you have to do anything manually at all. Ppro can take your entire stack of clips and in one operation spit out all the separate multiclips – what else are you looking for?

What version of Ppro are you using?

[Simon Ubsdell] “I love that movie – I still have the LP of the soundtrack somewhere, worn out with playing.”

It is the greatest and only of a unique genre – the screwball medieval family tragi-comedy – it’s “Bringing Up Baby” crossed with”Becket.”

O’Toole: “The day they band together is the day that pigs sprout wings.”
Hepburn: “There’ll be pork in the treetops come morning.”

    Simon –

    Please don’t go.

To quote from my favorite Christmas family movie, “The Lion in Winter” when Katharine Hepburn playing Eleanor of Acquitane turns directly to camera and says, at the end of a day when sodomy, patricide, infanticide, treason and incest were running their daily course.

“Well, what family doesn’t have its ups and downs.”

December 9, 2015 at 4:35 pm in reply to: What slows you down?

[Walter Soyka] ” what slows you down?”

Having to manually calculate time code relationships in order to “un-lift” sections of clips.

Having to export and then import subclips in order to efficiently use Twixtor on them.

Having to clean up the mess that PPro’s “switch audio” option generally leaves a timeline in. It’s the best option when editing multicam with audio split out to different cameras, but it’s very easy to unknowingly switch camera sources on the audio when all you are trying to do is switch the video.

When duplicating long timelines in Ppro I frequently have to close and re-open that project to get smooth playback.

Badly directed material. Since I’m generally the director of the material I cut, I take myself out to the woodshed for a major beatdown at least once per episode.

December 7, 2015 at 6:09 pm in reply to: OT – is the “new” Mac Pro a failure

[Walter Soyka] “Probably around $9,000 for 16 TB of raw storage and a RAID controller. But there is no solution like this for the Mac platform available at any price.”

Considering I spent around 12K for my first Mac X-serve that probably handled around 4TB (raid 0) at around 300 Gb/s – not bad at all.

[Bill Davis] “the general feeling in the X community is that this particular Forum is pretty far down the list as a place where high end X users want to spend all that much time.

    Go figure.”

[Scott Witthaus] “Speed is where you know the software so well, only a fraction of your concentration is on the software and the vast majority is on the visual story in front of you. Doesn’t matter what software you are using, because when you get to that point where you “hardly have to think to play” then you are enjoying “editing speed”.

Couldn’t agree more, which is why, so long as I can control it, I’m monogamous with my NLEs. Just curious about those who either have to, or chose, to play the field.

[Scott Witthaus] “I am not sure why anyone would try to bend FCPX to work like Avid or Premiere.”

Which is why I never map a keyboard to emulate another applications actions. When I started in Ppro I did not use their FCP7 keyboard layout — I prefer full immersion into whatever I’m working with. On the other hand this might be why I find it so difficult to work on several different NLEs at the same time – maybe the secret to that skill is having a strong base in one system and forcing other systems to adapt to that? Would love to hear from the non-manogomous editors out there how they manage to remember what keystrokes to use as they move from ap to ap.
