[Oliver Peters] “The best NLE ever – a VHS deck with a shuttle knob, burn-in tapes, and a legal pad!”

April 6, 2017 at 12:29 pm in reply to: Multicam source sequence mapping mono audio tracks

[Ryan Dundas] “So now when I play my sequence, my master audio meter to the right of my timeline is showing 11 channels and they are all getting levels. So why on earth am I only getting 8 channels when I right click on it and choose New Sequence From Clip. I figured I would get the exact same number of tracks in my new sequence when I nest it.
Anybody know what I might have missed?”

When creating your multicam sequence did you use the “make multicam” function? If so, then in the audio section you should have chosen “all cameras.” If you do that then your multicam source sequence will have every source available.

It is not advisable to go into your multicam source sequence and start messing around with the patching, it just screws things up. Choose the correct format when creating the multicam source. Also, right clicking on a multicam source and then choosing “make new sequence from clip” is flaky – a sequence is not a clip and the results can be weird. If you don’t have a sequence template that you like in the “new sequence” module, then simply pick one of your source clips and create a new sequence from that.

And yes, audio handling in Ppro is much more complex than in FCP, especially with multicam sources, and unfortunately there is little to no documentation for anything but the simplest uses.

[Bill Davis] “I’ll ape the old “the past is prolog” thing – and trust that my machine won’t auto-correct that into ProRes. “

“The past is ProRes”. Love it. Might add it to my handle.

[Bill Davis] ” the penchant for secrecy along the way hasn’t seemed to damage them all that much, has it? I kinda think they’ve done all right, actually.”

Bill, it’s a brave new world out there and your looking backwards.

Next you’ll be talking about the days when IBM ruled and people were cutting Quad videotape with magnets and razor blades.

As should know, nothing matters but the future to which Apple’s past accomplishment mean little or nothing. Living in the past …

[Andrew Kimery] “Apple admitting it made a mistake? That’s rare”

Not as rare as having some of the people on this forum admit that Apple made a mistake. For that we will have to wait for … nope, couldn’t come up with anything that qualifies.

The nMpro was but another example of Apple choosing design over substance. If it looks cool it must be cool works for consumer devices, not so much for work stations.

April 4, 2017 at 1:11 pm in reply to: The Mac Pro future. Finally some sense from Apple!

[Oliver Peters] “With the exception of HP and Dell workstations, I can’t say the same for most of the options on the PC side.”

I keep all my personal stuff running on a seven year old pc laptop and I’m writing this on a 3 year old Dell in my office that shows no signs of slowing down. I have only ever had 2 computers die on me and one was a Mac. On the PC side there is greater choice, and if you’re pinching pennies you might get in trouble, but all computer parts are commodities today, including Apple’s, and I can get a high school kid to build me a PC that will last as long as any Mac I’ve ever owned if I spec out the right parts.

[Tim Wilson] “These things are built to last now”

A KayPro was built like a tank, it too could have lasted years and years, but Moore’s “law” was in effect with a vengeance back then. It has since been repealed. What hasn’t changed since 2009 – CPU speed. With a cheese grater you could update everything else, which is why they still can compete with a nMpro. The main reason to get anything new today is i/o – Thunderbolt 3/USB-c. If I could incorporate that into my 2010 I never would have bought my 2013.

Computers don’t change today for 2 reasons – technological plateau and the move to smart phones. And come to think of it the former is probably a result of the latter. The research goes where the money is and the money has moved from your desk to your pocket.

[Tom Sefton] ” its worth waiting to release something truly special.”

Since when was a maintenance upgrade an object of scorn? I think Thunderbolt 3 / USB-C & newer GPUs that don’t burn up under stress would be pretty special. I can get it from Dell and HP, so it can’t be that hard to do.

March 29, 2017 at 4:57 pm in reply to: Multicam setup reality TV workflow

[Ryan Dundas] “We have 3 main cameras covering the event (Sony F55 with Atomos shogun blades recording in ProRes 422) along with a few gopros and a Sony A7s on a ronin picking up b-roll. We also have 2 788t audio recorders that will be picking up wireless lavs that we will have on about 10 different people. The 788ts and the F55s will be jam synced to help keep everything in sync in post.”

When creating your own timeline and then turning it into a multi-camera source in Ppro the audio layout is very limited, which is why I never use that feature. You can do everything you want by selecting all your sources and then right clicking and choosing the “create multicam source” feature. There are many choices and many steps to go thru in the dialogue and having 2 separate audio recorders makes this a lot harder, but that would be the way to do what you want.

March 22, 2017 at 1:56 pm in reply to: Save editable titles for use in another project

[Richard Martz] “I’m just wondering if there is any way to save titles created in a Premiere Pro project so they can be imported into another Premiere Pro project and altered when minor things change in major titles?”

In the Ppro Titler save the title as a template. This will save the title to be opened and modified with any project you open on the same machine.
