I seem to have the same problem with QT files
show up black in browser and don’t play (unless rendered in cache)

this started with the last update to Resolve.
I rolled back to 10 yesterday and problem went away,
then I noticed 10 didn’t work well with my Artist color
so I tried 10.0.2 again, and the problem was solved. I could work all day and no QT was black.

today it started again. black QT thumbnails… not all of them, and not even all of same codec.
My current Project is mixed QT, R3D and MXF, only QT files mess up.

I deleted both QT preferences files, repaired permissions and still problem persists.

been kind of expecting the time when QT starts failing other apps.
I just wish it dies already and a more fitting replacement comes along.

i’m on OSX 10.8.4, Mac Pro 4,1 and resolve lite 10.0.2

I’ll update if I find what caused it.

I had a presentation for the local editor’s guild showcasing some of Avid’s new features

I actually manage to transcode AVCHD cards through DMF
(even live on stage using a laptop and 2 external drives while showing other features during transcode)

DMF transcode seem to work for other formats too
(i would think consolidating would be simpler for the system)

consolidate failed on every combination/setting/version I tried except on a windows machine.
background consolidation works

DMF is an amazing feature, but it feels half baked.

maybe in the coming update…

well… only PR 422 HQ actually 🙂

the thing that most people sort of miss on this camera is the sensor
its a rather small micro 4/3
and it currently takes cannon EF lenses (and Zeiss ZF which is practically the same but more expensive)

these lenses are made for larger sensors… resulting in a world of crop factors, i’d say X2 and up

and not to be a RED advocate. but RAW DNG is not necessarily a good choice. having a well written, intelligent compression like R3D, and a talented team that keeps developing the compression makes a difference

RAW DNG… at 2.5 K is about 300MBs… (if i’m not all wrong about it)

i was told by BM guys that it will get over-cranking for slomo, but not on DNG, on PR and DNX

it looks interesting… but still needs much testing

few NAB tips 🙂

PPW (post production world) starts on saturday and has 5 packed days of so many lectures on so many topics your head will spin, you can pay individual days or all days deals, and its moderately priced.
you get to enter almost any session you want (not the certification sessions) and network with many people from virtually everywhere
I may be a bit biased as i’m giving 5 Avid sessions this year at PPW. but in past years i did paid to enter and never regretted it. i like that it starts the show 2 days earlier (on Sat) so it beefs up the week a little, and you get to see show floors getting final touch ups 🙂

there are many good, free (sponsored) lectures and sessions to see and attend, keep your ears and eyes open for them. for example, The Foundry always have interesting lectures at their booth, or last year, Autodesk gave a nice 4 hour hands on with Smoke, or Zacuto showing exclusive screenings of their camera shootout etc’
also non sponsored free lectures like the Post Pit, with changing speakers and topics.

make lists of what you MUST see and do it on your first and second days, never plan anything for thursday (half day).

don’t drink the nasty little energy drinks handed out for free everywhere, get a decent night sleep instead

if you must use restrooms … use the ones on less crowded floors, like upper north hall or something.
(though generally clean, rest rooms in crowded halls tend to be as crowded)

the book store booth at the north hall is excellent

AjA party is tough to get to if you don’t know anyone to get you in, though in that case you might not enjoy the party once you do get in (i think its a party to go to with people, not alone)
last year ASSIMILATE had a nice party too, AVID throws good ones when they do, and Bob’s gathering at the Hard Rock is always very fun. RED has a user’s party on sunday (details on REDUSER.net). and there is the Media Motion Ball too.
if you plan to go to the Supermeet. know that though it is a very nice gathering, lectures vary in quality, and it is mind numbingly long. especially due to the never ending raffle draw that takes (a very long) hour+ to complete. (in my opinion they should find a better way to do it).

i disagree about buffets being a cheep option (Tim)
try the Bellagio/Wynn/cosmopolitan for quite a unique LV experience (around 35$)

take your most comfy shoes for the days
and a good looking pair for the nights

bring at least one suite

and don’t “save” 10-30$ on a bargain room… its where you sleep and take showers (and hopefully more… wink) I always rather have a nice room than seeing a cheesy show or eating at an overpriced LV restaurant.

i like premiere, its a nice addition to any good set of chosen tools.
but in my opinion its far from being a main cutter.

its hard for me to believe that any improvement Adobe brings to PP6 can really bring it to a sufficient level, I’d be glad to be proved otherwise.

timeline control, trim tools, advanced editing options and controls, unifying codec, markers, interface, clarity, media management, smart user settings, elegant bins, shared environments… i could go on

it would practically take a rewrite.

a good video app is not necessarily a good editing app
Avid is an amazing editing app and mediocre video tool
FCP7 was really close to be both… that’s why everybody loved it so much.

premiere seems to overlook the core art and craft of cutting, and structuring story out of segments. instead focusing on a myriad of new features and flashy gizmos.
if you work long form narrative an use PP, you’re either a bad editor, or very badly informed.

and yet, Premiere is so cool to showcase and make nifty videos about,
that so many people today actually see it as a valid replacement.

take a look at Lightworks… no big loud marketing department, but a decent cutter, and its free, and open source… and even historic 🙂

all that said,
i use PP5.5 constantly in my workflows, there are things that it does best. i love Adobe as a company.. and i look forward to the next CS and the improvements it will bring.

this is a very 2005 question (arbitrary ..lol) don’t chose one. learn both, and add Lightworks as its open source, free and historic

i would start with Avid. and learn it well. i teach (Avid, FCP, Premiere) in many schools, from what i see, generally, people who start with Avid develop better habits over time. a lot of self taught PPro editors develop very bad habits.

for example, a lot of PPro editors don’t use trimming at all in their work (a lot of FCP editors too) and i don’t mean trimming as in shortening a clip or lengthening it slightly on the timeline. i refer to the deep process of finding the right cut out of dosens of options, Avid tools, in skilled hands, can offer 20-30 versions of a specific cut in about a minute.
sadly, this fine (relatively young) art of fine tuning cuts is dying with the rise of a new, self taught generation of PPro editors fueled by the flashy promisses of Adobe that PPro is a valid comparison to Avid in pro workflows..

that said, i love PPro, and i use it a lot, for what its good at.

as a film student you are going to learn and develop the skills that will one day help you work in this field. get as many skills as you can, and if you are into post, these skills involve learning softwares and what they are good at.
