That sounds really good Ron.
So when using the MCU with your Mackie mixer what kind of setup is that?
Mackie to MCU to Lhe?? or do you use the Mackie mixer at all when using the MCU?HD F.

Thanks Ron for that information about your setup.
Do you use a surface control with your setup to control the audio in FCP using the mixer and can you do that with any mixer?HD F.

Yeah of course composite is video.
What I meant was the RCA white and red audio cables that usually come bundled with the video composite yellow cable (as in the case of the output from the Sony Z1 that has all three of these outputs on one end of the supplied cable).
My question was quite simple: is it possible to capture audio directly from the camera while at the same time capturing the video via the COMPONENT inputs.
The answer now I think is to either get RCA to XLR adapters and use the RCA output from the camera to connect to the Lhe audio inputs,
OR
plug the RCA outputs directly into a mixer, go from the mixer to the Lhe, then either go directly from the Lhe to the speakers or as Bob and Ron suggest, take the output back from the Lhe to the mixer then go from the mixer to the speakers.
I am now looking at mixers. -
No problem Ron. You’ve been a great help.
I have been looking at a few mixers and after Christmas I’ll most definitely get one. The Mackie 402 looks pretty good quality for the price.
For monitoring once the audio has been captured Bob seems to prefer going back through the mixer (he says “You will also need cables that come out of the Kona LHe to go back into the mixer (XLR to 1/4″ phone plug), and more cables to go from the mixer CR Mon Out to the Speakers XLR inputs (also 1/4″ phone plug to XLR)”.
What are the advantages of doing that over a direct connection from Lhe to the speakers?HD. F

Thanks again Bob.
Everybody seems to think I want to do everything on the cheap and hate spending any money on cables or whatever. I never said anything about that ever and don’t know where that came from. Maybe it was Ron saying I might think his solution was “overkill” but I never said anything like that. I am getting my edit suite together slowly but surely and am just installing the AJA setup. I have a list of stuff I have to get which now includes a mixer and cables.
I don’t think the manual is very clear about the setup. I have now finally understood that I need to get new cables to link up to the camera but AJA could say things like that. Just as they didn’t say about having to get adapters for the BNC to RCA component cables. When you open the box you think you can plug in your board but you have to get on to the internet and find these adapters. They only cost about $6 it would have been nice if they had included them with the board.
Anyway thanks for everything -
Thanks Bob and Ron,
No $100 is no problem for a mixer so I’ll probably get that.
Just one detail about the audio capture again. I only have the breakout cable which does not have composite inputs (the breakout box does) so are you saying there is no way I can capture the audio directly without a mixer? The only audio out on the camera (Sony Z1) is the composite cables?HD F.

Thanks for that Ron. I’ll check out those speakers.
By the way I’ve asked this on other threads but got no answer yet. Do you know how to capture audio direct from the Camera into FCP via the Lhe?HD F.
-
Me again.
I’m just asking this question again cos well nobody answered it the first time!
The question is simply how do you capture the audio to FCP when capturing the video via component to the AJA Lhe and this WITHOUT a deck, directly from the camera (Sony Z1 in my case). Thanks in advance for any help.
HD F.

On the Lhe break out box there are composite inputs but not on the break-out cable (the “cheap” option which I have) but I still don’t know how to get the audio in to FCP apart from using the XLR inputs which would require a small mixer with composite in and xlr out I presume.

Thanks Walter,
I’m in Pal land so in the settings I have:
Sequence Preset: AJA Kona LH 1080i 25 DVCPro HD
Capture preset: AJA Kona LH 1080i 25 DVCPro HD
Device control preset: Firewire PalFCP cannot “initialize the video deck” is the message I get. I changed the settings on the camera to output DV but that has’nt changed things.
Any advice
