Thanks for this. Did anyone ever get back to you about how to actually place the metadata.xml file into the index partition in the first place using OSX?

    Thanks for confirming.

  • We online out of house.

  • Possibly. As long as we are going from 23.98 to 29.97, audio should stay in sync, I believe. That’s a good option. Thanks.

  • Thanks. I’m coming from FCP, so I was not aware of this timecode option.

Does anyone know if any of these DSLRs can be synced to build a 3D rig?

Having not heard a better solution, we are going to do the following.

Our shoot includes 2x Sony Z7Us and 2x Sony A1Us along with the AD-788T multi-track audio recorder.

We discovered that we can jam sync the Z7Us over firewire. The same is not true of the A1Us, but they can be used as the source for the Z7U sync.

We’ll send out a smart slate running time of day timecode with the shoot and slave the AD-788T to that.

We will manually set the timecode of the A1Us to time of day from the smart slate and leave TC RUN on Free Run.

We’ll then jam sync the Z7Us to one of the A1Us.

As a result, we will have three cameras dead in sync and the rest of the media will have approximate time of day time code. In post, where we sue Final Cut Pro, we’ll be able to use the “Make Multiclip Sequence” function to lay all media onto a timeline using timecode and then just nudge one of the cameras and the multi-track audio to get everything into sync.

If you run into a similar situation, feel free to contact me to see how it went.

I have used Plural Eyes. It does work well when all of your cameras are shooting the same subject. In the case of our upcoming shoot, the four cameras will be split up a lot of the time.

    Thanks for the suggestion, though.

Yeah. We did that the first time around, too. We were hoping to find a more automatic way to sync in post.

I’m surprised that no one makes a timecode generator that has firewire out specifically for the Sony cameras.

Why don’t we assume that we are not total idiots and that we already considered the possibility of making space on the SAN. We are a busy post department with nine series in edit. There is not space to be made. I am having to deal with the decision made not by the person who runs our SAN or my post supervisor, but by some corporate somebody who does not know the trouble that arises when you move media frequently. I am left to assume that they made their decision based solely on the fact that for $100k they could expand the SAN, for $2500 per week they could rent a SAN expansion, and for $2500 flat they could buy a few drives for my show to work from temporarily (2x8TB to be specific). Short-sighted though the decision may have been, and not taking into account the time wasted in reconnecting media repeatedly, it is the decision that was made.

Now that we have that cleared up, does anyone have a constructive answer to my actual questions?

    Hans
