23.98 “Time-Of-Day” timecode
I’m post supervisor on a production that starts shooting next week. It is a verite shoot with 3 Sony F800s. The DP wants to shoot 23.98, of course.
Here is the current plan:
The F800 will not shoot 24p so we are going with 23.98p.
Audio will be recorded on a 788T @ 48KHz. The 788T could do either 24 or 23.98, but we’re going to set it to 23.98 to match the cameras and use 23.98 timecode.
Since it is a verite shoot we would like all timecode to be time-of-day for easy syncing despite production almost certainly not slating.
Cameras will be jam-synced to audio at least twice per day.
We are posting on AVID MC 5.5.The problem that I see is that 23.98 TC is not clock accurate. Please confirm or correct me on that.
My initial thought is that if we end up with a 36 second difference between clock time and timecode throughout a 10-hour shoot day, then no big deal as long as all of the machines lose time at the same rate.
I just wanted to check to see if anyone else has done this and if there were problems that I haven’t thought of.
Thanks in advance.
