You can use Quicktime with DV or DVCpro codec, your original footage is super8. Any particualr reason to use h264?

In the bins, no. You can apply the effect in the timeline and if you want to add another fx, just nest it.

It also depends on your hardware. Just try with a few video samples and let us know the result.

For the lost files in your P2 card, you can do a little research in google, you have sotware to recover data from your P2 card, like the usb keys.

According to Avid Media Composer Version Matrix, your version of Media Composer (2.8.4) need osx 10.4.11 and QuickTime 7.3

If you want to use 10.5.8 you need QT 7.6.2 and MC 4.0.2
