Clients don’t let local stations or Charter make their spots cuz they are good. They let em cuz they do it for free in exchange for selling air time. This only makes em look bad and becomes more harm than good in most cases as folks laugh at their spent dolalrs or turn the channel. This is your selling point if wanting to produce local spots. They’ll simply pay for your services if wanting a decent product. The local dudes can then make em a package deal for the air time… and will often start calling on you for production, you’ll find.
Don’t try to match these guys low end prices. You are not competing with them. -

As you mentioned, it depends on the editor and of course it depends greatly on market. The natl average for a freelancer is 50 bucks an hour. The average edit suite with editor is $175/hr.
This is more in LA…. less in Oklahoma.I can tell you my rates are a bit skewed. My freelance rate is 75 an hour and my in-house rate is now just 100 per hour. It’s because I now work out of my house, my Avid is paid for and I’d much rather edit unsupervised in my underwear than put on dockers and drive to a supervised gig that pays less.

While I’ve gotten staff editing jobs by painting the cyc and hangin’ shelves, man I didn’t answer an ad to do it. It was more like “sorry we don’t have any positions open at this time” with me responding “oh you just don’t yet!”
If hiring initiative, an ad is not required. If exploiting an editor for his car, on the other hand… -
It would drasticly limit the work you otherwise would have gotten as an editor. Beef up your boi all ya can and don’t be afrraid to add an consulting jobs to it or your resume but know that it would limit you if you made that your title.
