I do more one-man-band productions now. While I use to make more money as a specialist, my ability to make a turn-key production is now my saving grace. It’s also allowing me to evolve into original programming, which is what I’ve always wanted to do anyway. It’s workin’ out fine.

No. The drag can be getting lost in your verbage… or trying the find a word to revise later. It’s precompute is it’s current handicap with this, not the crawl itself.

It’s not the difficulty of getting it goin’ that will be the demise fo Avid. It’s their down-grading of product line with simultaneous false marketing of that rapidly deminishing line. They should have just declared a regrouping and done that. Making their clientele beta test for them as they try to catch up with FCP was a bad decision by management that obvioulsy had no experience with this. In the last 5 years, nobody has sold more copies of FCP than Avid. It’d be hard for them to pretend to wonder why this is happening at this point.
Of the 120 that were sent home, how many of those do you think were editors/consultants? Exactly… because they don’t consult with editors.

Who would have thought they still had 120 employees?
Must all be in the creative writing/marketing department.
I don’t expect em to be around much longer. We’ve not seen effort by that company in close to a decade now.

You can list yourself in the local productin guid, send out mailers and put your cold-callin’ hat on but n the end, you’ll never have a better marketing force than a band of very happy clients.
I’d venture to say you know some folks who own businesses. Write em a jingle. I’d also venture to say you have filmmaking friends… score something for em.
For 2 decades, I’ve had young people ask me “How do I become an editor?” I’m not being sarcastic when I reply “edit stuff, man.”

The only hickup I can think of is rendering a precompute that large. Even when just mixing down a show, I’m now in the habbit of doing it in 30 minute chunks just to avoid these hickups. If 4 30 min. crawls are an option, that’s what I’d go for.

It depends on who ya pay rant to, of course. The last slum lord I had shook me down for more than 7 grand a month while putting my content on his demos. lol
I paid less overhead at my own lil shop and got to put the thermostat lower than 80.

naaa, they’ll be good with it as long as you don’t bring the camera inside.
You’ll find that showing up and acting like you are suppose to be there buys you much more press passes than calling and trying to aquire one… at least in motorsports. Il ike to walk up to the biggest security dude right off the bat and ask him to step aside… maybe send him to get me a bottled water. lol Once ya do that, there is no place you are not free to go.

All valid points. Getting any client to overlook the trike on the porch, the kids at the table and the dog pouncin’ em requires some consessions. This is a delicate dance. Go lower than 100 bucks an hour and you’ll lose business in the name of not being taken seriously. Try to hang with the post-houses at full rate and they’ll plum ask ya why they should come to your house. The bottom line is every gig we bid on is a test of our marketing and talent. Working from home only magnifies this.

virtual dub is free and you can get cool lil plugins for it. There is a stabilizer for it that is much better than Avid’s.
    kind of cool.
