This is easy and simple.
Walk. They invited you to leave by not so much as offering an incentive for you to restrict yourself. Burn no bridges as you leave. They will probably need and want your freelance services for a while, ironically, doubling your pay while you are free to create as you like on the side. Your insticts are usually spot on. In this case, you didn’t did the strong arm of a new company that doesn’t even know you. I learned a long time ago that any company that requires a non compete for me to keep me there is not in the practice of keeping a good environment to keep me there.

I’m not hearing the sell out part. If they would have offered you a bonus or a bigger salary to sign away freedoms that’s one thing but that aint the case. You did the right thing. Walk. Ride. Enjoy your freedom to create.

I always clearify but I’d assume that means first bring up the one half sized image to full size then bring in another split screen.
Heck we still have old producers asking for a chyron when they just want a name key. It aint like I’m gonna start surfing ebay to see if I can find an old chyron.

The best thing about making documentaries is you get to discard all templates. There are no rules. If there are, feel free to break them.

How do you manage your speed?
Think non-liniarly. Do one task first then go on to the next. ie: rough cut/tell the story, then cut it down to time, then go from the top with b-roll, then go from the top with music, then hit it with graphics and transitions, ect.

How do you avoid distractions?
How do you avoid wasting your time on forums, facebook, email … while editing.
You dink witht hat stuff in your off time. You don;t have time to play when doing your job.

Multi-tasking:
How do you keep it organised in your mind and not lose it while multitasking (between converting, ripping, burning, …)
By doing one task at a time.

How do you explain to your boss the time wasted on technical problems and computer freezing and conversion problems…
You don’t. He made time for this in his bid or has a space for it on your project sheet. He’s a big boy. He knows how it works.

Are you ever satisfied with the final edit?
It aint done till you are, man.

What do you do when your taste is “simplicity” and don’t get so impressed with texts exploding or all the fancy effects.
I skip the cheese.

How to become more technical, what to read, what softwares to use?
You just master the tools required, man.

You’ll know by your needs and your worth. Don’t strive for average.

Your 7D’s overheating issues make it not a match for this gig. You could rent some tape-based cameras but if renting, man, I’d go with nano recorders and tell em how long the event will be. This will compress accordingly and give you peace of mind, not having to schlock tape while the CEo wraps things up with an important keynote.

Long ago, I decided none of my time is worth less than other times. By that, It’s very easy math for me. I simply charge the same day rate for consulting as I do for shooting, producing, lighting, editing, animating, sound design, or stunt driving.
Some see consulting as canibalization. I don’t. I see it as providing a service for a price… no different than anything else to me.

It’s easy enough to do but you’ll not make any friends this way. Shoot your client’s store. Show what THEY have. Going out of your way to get into legal trouble will indeed find you with success in just that.
