Don’t over think it. If you were to set up shop on mainstreet, that’s one thing. You’re hookin a brother up with a mini documentary of a one day event. How long you stay in the hot tub should be your biggest concerne.

    Dude, you insult me!
Stop it. You insult yourself by whoring for free. That’s not a whore, that’s a willing slut. Lots of sluts are awesome at what they do, man, and lots of dudes dig it. It can make you downright popular. Stop acting like a victim when you happily hop in line for abuse.
    Man up.
Stick your chest out at state your rate.
    See what happens.

    Really?
Man, what a longass pain in the arse. Seriously.

When folks call my place, they already know what’s up… hence the phone call. Now most of the time after hearing the schpill, I’m like “sweeeeeeet, soooooo, tuesday?” But really, other times I’m all, “WTF are you talking about? Are you messing with me? Let’s not hop on the titanic.” You know how many times I’ve offended a client?
    Me either, man.
My job is to bust out some badass money-makin shit. I do that no matter what. I don’t care who gets fussy in the process, man, I never have time to. The deadline is like Friday!. STFU, change your freakin mind and give me a big freakin lovin hug Saturday. How’s that sound?
This stuff doesn’t have to be hard, man. People dance on eggshells till their feet are sore, that’s all.

    Hi, Simon.
I love stations that do horrible work for free. It enables me to justify my rates without having to say a word. I’ll say it again… I love horrible local spots that yield no profit for the check writer. Not unlike an ambulance chasing attorney, when I see an ineffective local spot, thats who I call that day. I explain why and how they have wasted money (they really don’t know until somebody tells them) then explain what I can do to help them and how much it will cost. They haggle sometimes. They pass sometimes. Other times, they know in an instant what I am saying is not a pitch but the truth and they respond accordingly… instantly creating an on-going relationship.
You’d be surprised at how many people still think advertising on local television is somehow beneficial in this ADD, tivo world. If somebody doesn’t hold them by the hand and explain they are paying for folks to pee, hit the fridge, or fast forward through their dollars, it just doesn’t dawn on them. Habitual behavior is often undetected until somebody points it out.

January 31, 2011 at 4:42 pm in reply to: A question on editing pacing

My thinking is if an editor is counting while cutting dialog, he’s butchering the story. Pace has to do with feel. It’s not a template. Like a goo song, it can change at the drop of the hat then back again, surprising those who are enjoying it. If an editor hasn’t the ability to follow a piece as well as lead/create it, the production needs a better editor.

We’ll just have to agree to disagree on this one. The last time I dusted off my Lowel intruments was at least 9 months ago… maybe a year. I need the ability to change the color temp on a camera light. I like the ability to change it’s focus on the fly without reframming the camera. Thats where the light I mention comes into play. It wasn’t the price that gravitated me to this light. It was the advatanges I gained vs lights I can only control with the camera… a tool that’s busy shooting.
Justin, you can find these lights with a quick google search or just swing by your local hardware store. It’s white LEDs are blue so you want the one with a red LED in the middle. This is how you’ll change it’s color temp with it’s dimmer. If you get a handful of em, you’ll find you can often light full scenes in select places without having to run electricity. I’ve difused bright white LEDS in the field with a piece of paper before with ideal results. It’s all up to the MacGyver in you.
Certainly there are situations where I’d not dare bust out the cheese in front of a client. Again though, that hasn’t been the case in a year or so. Most of the time, I just have a show to make.

again, 20 bucks at ace hardware store. Mucho better than any dimmable LED on camera set up I have ever had.
It depends on what you are shooting of course. If shooting medical stuff, flat is fine. Seeing is best. If ina corporate environment, you really don’t wanna throw on the ole head band either. Music, docs, run and gun story-telling? Man it’s perfect.

That’s why I ran away from weddings many years ago. It’s amazing. Most momzilla’s have no problem paying a still photog 3 grand to snap some pics and hand em to em but hate the thought of matching that price for 5 times the work for a video that will cherrished forever. In a nutshell, this is why weddings, like news, are introductory gigs to the production industry.

No doubt audio is half of video. Certainly overlooked to much by many.
